Reshma Saujani re-emerged today in the public eye—for the first time after her stinging primary loss to Carolyn Maloney—to introduce Harpreet Singh Toor, who is aiming to be the first Sikh elected to the City Council, in his kick-off press conference today on the steps of City Hall.
Saujani said that post-election she has been looking to put together an organization will work on some of the issues she raised in the campaign, like micro-finance, and said that she has been writing for the WNYC blog "It's A Free Country."
Although Saujani lost by 60 points, far worse than many expected, she ran strong in the district's South Asian neighborhoods, and her presence at the news conference today seems to signal that she will continue to be a political leader in that community.
Toor is running for the seat vacated by Thomas White, who passed away in August. So far, the biggest name to throw her hat in the ring for that race is Nicole Paultre Bell, the fiancee of Sean Bell, the unarmed man who was murdered in a hail of bullets by the NYPD in 2006. Toor, a community activist and a TV host on a Punjabi-American television station, said afterwards that he think he has enough support in the African-American community there to have a winning coalition. The special election is Nov.
