Rapes in India rise by 873% from 1953

IANS / Thursday, December 20, 2012 16:16 IST

The number of rapes in India shot up from 1953 to 2001 by a staggering 873%, the CPI(M)'s "People's Democracy" said in its latest edition released Thursday.

"Sexual crimes against women have been rising alarmingly all across the country," it said in the wake of the brutal gang-rape of a young woman in a bus in Delhi.

It said statistics compiled by the National Crime Records Bureau showed that between 1953 and 2011, the incidents of rape went up by 873%.

This was three times faster than all cognizable crimes put together and three-and-a-half times faster than murder. And between 2007 and 2011, rape incidents increased by 9.7%.

The People's Democracy quoted the Guardian newspaper as saying: “Of all the G-20 nations, India has been labelled the worst place to be a woman.”

In a survey conducted by Thomson Reuters' Trust Law Women, a hub of information and support for women's rights, India ranked with Afghanistan, Congo and Somalia as one of the most dangerous places for women.

Amongst the metros, it said Delhi topped the list of incidents of rape.

From 2007 and 2011, Delhi saw 2,620 rape cases. Comparatively, Mumbai had 1,033, Bangalore 383, Chennai 293 and Kolkata 200 cases.
Worse, it said, "is the fact that in three of the four cases of rape, the culprits went unpunished between 2002 and 2011 in Delhi".

Of the 5,337 rape cases in the last decade, in 3,860 the culprits were either acquitted or discharged by courts for lack of "proper" evidence.
The conviction rate for the country as a whole, on the average, between 2001 and 2010, in rape cases was 26% only.

"Far from fearing a deterrent punishment, the criminals are not afraid of the law any longer, it appears, because of such abysmal record of delivery of justice in the country.

"Home secretary RK Singh did concede a few months ago that it was time to 'stop talking about law and order and start talking about delivery of justice'.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist demanded the early passage of the Bill for the Prevention of Sexual Assault in the Workplace, fast track courts to ensure speedy justice in rape and cases of sexual harassment and domestic violence, and a time-bound action plan by states to deal with pending cases of crimes against women.

Delhi Gang-Rape Case Draws American Media Attention

Delhi Gang-Rape Case Draws American Media Attention

Lalit K Jha/Washington - Dec 23, 2012

The large-scale protests in India over the gang rape of a girl in a moving bus has attracted the attention of American media which blamed it on poor law and order and a lacklustre criminal justice system.

At a time when the mainstream American media itself is battling over the issue of fiscal cliff, debating the relevance of gun-control laws in the aftermath of shootout inside a school that killed 20 children, newspapers and news channels have been taking a serious note of outburst of the peoples' anger against the rape on the young girl who is battling for her life at a hospital in New Delhi.

"These are unprecedented demonstrations," National Public Radio reported.

"They want justice for this young woman, and they want women in this country generally to feel safer on the streets, at work, in subways, and on public transportation," it said.

"Clashes Break Out in India at a Protest Over a Rape Case," headlined the New York Times, stating that thousands of protesters streamed into the heart of New Delhi to demand justice and better policing in the wake of the brutal rape.

"The roots of the problem run deep in a conservative society that is having trouble adjusting to educational and economic advances by women, long confined to the home. Demographics also play a role, with half of India's population under 25 and female infanticide and the neglect of girls creating a growing gender imbalance," the daily said.

"But India's criminal justice system, riddled with incompetence, corruption and political meddling, seems unable to respond effectively," the New York Times said.

"A young woman was gang-raped and beaten to near death on a moving bus in New Delhi, police say. She is in intensive care at a city hospital, battling for her life," CNN reported.

Official data show that rape cases have jumped almost 875 per cent over the past 40 years -- from 2,487 in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011, it said.

New Delhi police fired water cannon at protesters, it said in another news report.

"Thousands of people demonstrated outside the Indian president’s residence in New Delhi on Saturday, breaching barricades and clashing with police over the brutal rape of a 23-year-old girl before authorities drove them back with sticks, tear gas and water cannons," the Los Angeles Times reported.

This is certainly a bogus identifier as far as i am concerned. In 1971, there was a near ZERO presence of any kind of instant Media in India. This stat looks really bad only because only now these kinds of incidences have started to be reported and coming out in public knowledge. Earlier, with the kind of stigma and backlash connected with this issue, i am surprised that even 2487 were also reported...

For me, it just amounts to blowing the facts out of proportions. It would be more honest to compare the stats during the last 10 yrs or so. For me its heartening to see that the culprits were caught in a record time. All hope is not lost in Indian Judicial System. This also proves that if media reacts in the right authoritative way, and if the people responsible for maintaining law orde are held accountable for their actions, the law enforcement authorities have no option but to react and bring the criminals to justice.

Then we will not see police being a mute spectator while the criminals have had hey time in their presence as happened in 1984, again in Delhi.

One also has to look legal defination of rape in India.Any guy who sleeps with a girl with a promise to marry later can be term as rapists. So all men that are having pre marital sex or live in relationships are at risk of being termed as rapists. These type of cases also contribute in increasing number of rape cases as more and more people are engaging in pre marital sex and live in relationship and any type of backing out of relationship
can charge them as rapists
