PATIALA: Bir Devinder Singh Former Deputy Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha in a hard hitting communication to the Akal Takhat Chief, Singh Sahib Giani Gurbhachan Singh, has sought punitive action as per the code of conduct of the Sikh Religion, against the SAD President and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar for an act of sacrilege of Gurudwara Dookh Nivarin Sahib Patiala for hoisting BJP and Akali party flags in the holy precincts of the Gurdwara.

He alleged in his letter that although Sukhbir Singh Badal has already politicised all the Gurdwaras under the SGPC control but this recent act of hoisting BJP party flags, thousands in number in the holy precincts of the Gurdwara has started the process of ‘Safronisation’ of the historic Gurdwaras for achieving their parochial political ends. This is certainly an act of sacrilege of the Gurdwara and breach of Gur-Maryada. They have committed an act of apostasy ( Man-Matt ) for which they are liable to be summoned and punished at the Holy Akal Takhat as per Sikh Religion’s code of conduct.

Such a brazen misuse of the sanctorum of the historic Gurdwara Dookh Nivarin Sahib by the Akalis under the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal has hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community. Jathedar of the Akal Takhat should also get the police case registered against Sukhbir Singh Badal, Avtar Singh Makkar and also against the President of the BJP for committing an act of blasphemy in collaboration with the local BJP and Akali workers.

It is a matter of shame that many members of the SGPC from Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib Districts including former SGPC President Kirpal Singh Badungar were present in precincts of the Gurdwara while this act of sacrilege was committed but no one dared to object or pointed a finger on the process of ‘Saffronisation the Gurdwaras, hence they should also be punished accordingly, urged Bir Devinder Singh.

The holy precincts of the Gurdwara can only be used for religious congregations for preaching spiritual discourses that too strictly in consonance with the Sikh ethos and thought as enshrined by the Sikh Gurus and by The Shabad Guru Sri Guru Granth Sahib, it certainly cannot be used by political alliances to chalk out the game plans of their political gimmickries.

Bir Devinder Singh urged the Jathedar of the Akal Takhat to direct the SGPC to remove these flags of the BJP and Akali Party immediately failing which Sikh Sangat may resort to direct action to remove these party flags themselves leaving the responsibility of consequences, if any, squarely with the SGPC and SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Tribune Impact
Hoardings, party flags removed from gurdwara
Tribune News Service

Patiala, December 4

All hoardings, banners having photographs of political leaders and flags of the SAD and the BJP were today removed from Gurdwara Dukhnivaran Sahib here. Notably, The Tribune has highlighted in these columns that party flags of the SAD and the BJP, besides the hoardings of SAD president and Punjab Deputy Speaker Sukhbir Singh Badal, could be seen inside the gurudwara.

Former Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh had also shot off a letter to the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Giani Jathedar Gurbhachan Singh seeking action against Sukhbir for allowing the putting up of party flags in the holy precincts of the gurdwara.

Re: Punish Sukhbir, Makkar for act of blasphemy .........

Dear Soul_jyot,
It may be useful to quote the rules that prohibit - Gurdwaras - I found the following - are there any more?
<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:SimSun;} </style> <![endif]--> "r. At a high-level site in every gurdwara should be installed the nishan sahib (Sikh flag). The cloth of the flag should be either of xanthic or of greyish blue colour and on top of the flag post, there should either be a spearhead or a Khanda (a straight dagger with convex side edges leading to slanting top edges ending in a vertex).

#Article XXVI - Method of Adopting Gurmatta
a. The Gurmatta can only be on a subject that affects the fundamental principles of Sikh religion and for their upholding, such as the questions affecting the maintenance of the status of the Gurus or the Guru Granth Sahib or the inviolability of the Guru Granth Sahib, ambrosial baptism, Sikh discipline and way of life, the identity and structural framework of the Panth. Ordinary issues of religious, educational, social or political nature can be dealt with only in a Matta [resolution].
Article XXVII - Appeals against Local Decisions
An appeal can be made to the Akal Takht against a local congregation’s decision."
