BEIJING/NEW DELHI: A week before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected as state guest in Washington,

a monitoring role to China in South Asia, particularly between India and
Pakistan, a fact that has stuck in New Delhi's throat.

The US and China have agreed to work together to bring about stable and peaceful relations in all of South Asia, Obama said during his joint briefing with Chinese president Hu Jintao in Beijing. Hu, who spoke first in the briefing, did not mention Pakistan or South Asia.

They (US and China) "support the efforts of Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight terrorism, maintain domestic stability and achieve sustainable economic and social development, and support the improvement and growth of relations between India and Pakistan," the joint statement said.

This is a rare occasion when a US president has acknowledged that Beijing has a role to play in the India-Pakistan relationship. The move, if serious, runs counter to predictions of US foreign policy experts that the US would not acquiesce in a future Chinese hegemony in the region.

While New Delhi maintained a studied silence on the joint statement, it has infuriated officials in the foreign office because it brings back nasty memories of another US-China joint statement by Bill Clinton and Jiang Zemin on June 29, 1998. Then too, it was Clinton and Jiang, in what India considered "offensive" language, scolding India and Pakistan for their nuclear tests. India had reacted sharply then, buffetted by general international condemnation after the tests.

But Tuesday's statement cuts at the heart of an Indian effort to build a relationship with the US without China complicating the issue. Former diplomat KC Singh said, "The statement was uncalled for and gratuitous, and serves to poison the chalice before the PM goes to Washington."

The reality is perhaps that the joint statement was drafted by Obama's China officials who don't carry sensitivities of India with them. But that it was allowed to go through signals to many Indian strategists that Obama may be more than pliant to China, giving it a role in a region where it's bound to come into conflict with a country Obama says is a US strategic partner, India.

The question is whether the US was pressured into giving China a bigger role in the region in return for other favours in areas like the North Korean and Iranian nuclear issues. The Indian government, which has always opposed third party intervention in the India-Pakistan dialogue, is likely to be worried about the new development.

The joint statement also shows that Washington is agreeable to the idea of China playing a bigger role in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is another issue that can rattle New Delhi.

"The two sides are ready to strengthen communication, dialogue and cooperation on issues related to South Asia and work together to promote peace, stability and development in that region," the joint statement further said explaining the parameters of US-China cooperation in the region.

A Chinese foreign ministry official later said the two leaders did not discuss specifics of the situation in South Asia because there was not much time available for that. There were a lot of other issues for them to discuss, he said.

But the joint statement is the product of weeks of discussions between two sides and the US administration officials did approve the phrases concerning China's role in South Asia.

So Obama accepted the supremacy of China and Now India has no option but strengthen its military
By saying that China who probably is the No.1 enemy of India to monitor the ties is like saying That India should gift disputed terratories

Gurbani describes an AKIRTGHANN...as the WORST POSSIBLE human Trait...even worse than murder...India is akirtghann as far as the SIKHS are concerned...until it makes amends...what goes around comes a around..as Master tara Singh told Nehru..WE SINK..India SINKS as well...(Akirtghann means.. UNGRATEFUL). In spite of and Despite the 1984 genocide..SIKH Soldiers still stand proud in NEFA defending an ungrateful Nation ???? A house DIVIDED against ITSELF falls sooner than later...China is just an excuse...

Already China is refusing to stamp Visa on the passports of Indian Kashmiris. They are issuing Visa on a separate paper. But India is refusing to recognise such Visas and are not allowing Indian Kashmiris with such Visas to travel to China!

I am more than aware..of all happenings in Tibet and elsewhere...The Chinese in malaysia refused to sell us Sikhs atta daal sugar etc during the 1962 War..even though we have nothing to do with India...and they too are Malaysian Chinese...and it was our MALAY PM who started a HELP DEMOCRACY WAR FUND to collect money for INDIA....so we do know a lot of things...even though we dont live over there lol...

Gyani ji

Ok China is not better, but what will happen to sikhs if India falls. As we have seen regionalism is increasing so all sikhs will be asked to go back to Punjab if India got divided
as all UP bihari's will be asked to back. The result is that there is going to be again a partition like situation and again sikhs which are quite rich and doing businesses all over India will suffer very badly

Kanwardeep Ji,
I am glad you got my point.....
BUT I am also NOT saying..Sikhs will "benefit"..IF INDIA Falls...
SIKHS have done way MORE than their share to make sure INDIA doesnt fall....thye died to get it Independence..they died in 1962 on the cold Himalayas..they dies in 1965 ichhogill and destroying patton tanks on Wagah Border..they died in 1972 in Bangladesh..and THEY WILL DIE SOME MORE in NEFA..Arunachal pardesh...Kashmir...on all Indian Borders just as bravely..again and again..and again....

BUT my POINT is...a SIKH getting a burning TYRE around his NECK in New Delhi DIES the same way..even IF its a CHINESE TYRE...Pakistani tyre..or Bangladeshi Tyre. Are the Sikhs expected to be "grateful"..the burning tyres were placed by INDIANS..and NOT by CHINESE..Pakis..??

The INDIANS have to get things RIGHT..do the RIGHT THING...practise REAL DEMOCRACY..REAL SECULARISM..GIVE each Indian EQUAL RIGHTS..so that ALL INDIANS can give their LIVES for INDIA...not just Sikhs on the streets of Delhi...or in Nefa !!

Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai? :{;o:

???? When did Obama accept the supremacy of China?
i think we are giving the chinese too much oomph.

this is my assessment of the current situation:

The US of A doesn’t give a hollering hoot about India or any other country (that is not NATO) unless it impacts/affects them negatively...directly. They have the Chinese mainland surrounded; the Philippines, Taiwan, Guam, South Korea and Japan are just military extension arms of the US. They also have all the energy producing countries dancing to their tunes; kuweit, UAE, Saudi Arabi, Iraq, Qatar, Oman, Canada. The only rogue ones remaining are Iran and to some extent Russia.

From a military perspective china is in no way superior to the US because of the strong US presence in the pacific and their securing of proven 'freindly' oil reserves. From a geopolitical standpoint China is still far behind and likely to remain behind unless they become energy independent. (otherwise confrontation is likely to erupt quicker than inticipated)

methinks, India is of little military value to the US, they are also remarkably uncooperative on many fronts the US wishes of them (namely Iran) and their reluctance to adopt American weapon systems that were offered in the MRCA auction and their nitpicking on the Nuclear deal. India should look to its own and never rely on a country like America for security…they will never have India’s best interests at heart.

China threatens to trigger US dollar crash - Telegraph

this is what it is all about...that is worrying the US to take tough stances against china. but if push came to shove the US can also pack an equally potent punch against the Red Dragon...Trade Wars.

and that in a nutshell is the reality of the situation.
