Akal Takht edict violation

  • Navtej Singh Kauni Navtej Singh Kauni (pic) is an SGPC member from Doda (Muktsar)
  • He reportedly attended a Dera Sacha Sauda congregation at Bhullar village on May 16 during campaigning for Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections in violation of the Akal Takht edict
  • Kauni said he had gone to the congregation to call on a person and not participate in it
  • This is the second time Kauni has been awarded ‘tankhah’ for attending the Dera Sacha Sauda congregation

Trouble for Bhai Charanjeet too
  • Bhai Charanjeet Singh Ludhiana has been given ‘tankhah’ for allegedly transporting four ‘birs’ of Guru Granth Sahib to an airport in suitcases in violation of the Akal Takht edict
  • He has been directed to perform 'sewa' for one week

The Sikh clergy announced ‘tankhah’ to SGPC member Navtej Singh Kauni and Bhai Charanjeet Singh Ludhiana here today.

While Kauni has been awarded ‘tankhah’ (punishment for religious misconduct) by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh for attending a congregation of Dera Sacha Sauda in violation of the Akal Takht edict, Bhai Charanjeet Singh Ludhiana has been given ‘tankhah’ for allegedly transporting four ‘birs’ of Guru Granth Sahib to an airport by keeping them in suitcases.

Following a meeting of the Sikh clergy at the Akal Takht Secretariat here, Giani Gurbachan Singh directed Kauni to perform ‘path’ of Japji Sahib apart from 'Nitnem' at Sri Darbar Sahib, Muktsar, besides listening to ‘gurbani’ for one hour and performing ‘sewa’ there daily for 18 days. He has also been asked to perform ‘ardaas’ by offering Rs 2,100, ‘apologising for his deed’ and then inform the Akal Takht Secretariat about it.

Kauni, an SGPC member from Doda (Muktsar), had reportedly attended the dera congregation at Bhullar village on May 16 during campaigning for Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections.

Reacting to the ‘tankhah’, Kauni clarified that he had not gone to the dera congregation to participate in it, but he was there to call a person.

Incidentally, this is the second time that Kauni has been awarded ‘tankhah’ for attending Dera Sacha Sauda congregation. Earlier, in March 2011, the Sikh high priests had directed him to clean utensils in the ‘langar’ hall of the Golden Temple for a fortnight. At that time, he had also pledged to follow the Akal Takht edict as per which the Sikhs were directed to boycott Dera Sacha Sauda after Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh “hurt Sikh sentiments” by imitating attire of Guru Gobind Singh in 2007.

In another instance, Sikh clergy announced ‘tankhah’ for Bhai Charanjeet Singh Ludhiana for allegedly carrying four ‘birs’ of Guru Granth Sahib to an airport by keeping them in suitcases so as to take them to the USA. This was a clear violation of the Akal Takht edict which has laid out proper guidelines to transport the holy book from one place to another.

The Akal Takht Jathedar directed Bhai Charanjeet Singh to perform ‘sewa’ at ‘joda ghar’ (shoe-keeping facility), besides cleaning the utensils at the ‘langar’ at the Golden Temple for one hour daily for one week. He has also been asked to perform ‘Nitnem’ and five ‘paths’ of Japji Sahib daily at Sri Harmandar Sahib for a week. After undergoing 'tankhah', he will also perform ‘ardaas’ by offering Rs 5,100 at the Akal Takht for ‘mistake committed by him’. On returning to the USA, he will also hold a ‘Sehaj Path’.

The clergy also made it clear that Guru Granth Sahib could not be permanently installed in the houses which have 'liquor bar'. It was also clarified that Akhand Path could only be held in gurdwaras or home and not in 'samadhs' or other such places.

Clergy holds SGPC member 'guilty' of defying Akal Takht directive

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Punja...Akal-Takht-directive/SP-Article1-1123394.aspx

...

As per tradition, the jathedar read out the 'hukamnama' (directive) holding the SGPC member guilty from the balcony of the Akal Takht. Kauni stood with folded hands below the Takht and accepted the 'tankha'.

As part of the 'tankha', Kauni will perform 'sewa' at the 'langar' and 'jora ghar' at gurdwara Shri Darbar Sahib in Muktsar for 18 days. He will also hear 'gurbani' for an hour and also offer prayers at the shrine.

After completion of the 18-day period, he will make an offering of `21,000 in the 'golak' of the shrine. Thereafter he will again present himself before the Akal Takht for atonement.

In a similar decision, the clergy found a Ludhiana Sikh, Charanjit Singh, 'guilty' of violating the Akal Takht and SGPC rules while trying to transport 'birs' of the Guru Granth Sahib to US. He was asked to undergo seven-day 'tankha' at Harmandar Sahib. This involves performing 'sewa' in the shrine and also listening to 'gurbani'.

Its really sad the way Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib is going soft on serial offenders like Navtej Kauni. What value will the directions issued from the Akal Takht Sahib hold if SGPC members themselves are openly flaunting them. The stand of the Jathedar himself seems no more than an eyewash.
Very sad indeed.

The one in bold shows the ignorance of the honchos who "manage" Sikhi in India.

If I am not mistaken there was a thread here which showed how planes were chartered to bring the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji birs to Toronto and to Malaysia. Gyani ji can confirm the latter, and I called it a total waste of money and idol worshiping because each bir was given a seat (fasten your seat belts). The planes were ritualistically decorated. I wonder where they hid the liquor carts! The same money could have been spent on the needy or on many other useful things.

We used to get the Birs in wooden crates in containers which were shipped to the US and Canada and distributed them for free to anyone who wanted to have them at their homes. Then, all of a sudden the container that was almost loaded to the ship was brought back to Delhi and all the Birs were taken out. I mentioned about it in the following thread but I could not find "the chartered planes" thread.

http://www.sikhphilosophy.net/hard-talk/29663-now-getting-a-bir-needs-recommendation.html

Shabad Guru does not become Shabad Guru till Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is opened and studied and practiced to make a difference in our lives and others'.

If the above is not done, it is just a book no matter how decorated each seat of the chartered planes is.

Now we are not allowed to import them anymore which is a shame.

And now, the poor chap is punished because of bringing them to the US.

Denying the universal message of fraternity, brother/sisterhood, equality is like refusing to revive the dying via CPR.

We are thinking the same thoughts. Breaking news is that the next thing to be banned are hand-written birs. So far we are not finding confirming news stories. Stay tuned.

Just realized they have a Tankha count, does 3 equal struck off the Sikh list for good?

Punishment of forced seva and forced Gurbani listening - I wonder how many fear this punishment system?

Totally agree with Tejwant Singh. For food to be digested we much take in small portions and digest each part to get the complete nourishment from the food.
