Nanakshahi calendar author accuses Sant Samaj of vested interests

Paul Singh Purewal, author of Nanakshahi calendar (NC), has accused Sant Samaj of vested interests for raising the demand to revert to the traditional Bikrami calendar after 10 years. The Canada-based Sikh scholar told TOI over phone that it would be a retrograde step to switch back to Bikrami calendar from Nanakshahi calendar. "There were scientific reasons why Sikhs chose the latter over Bikrami calendar. It will be against Gurbani too," he said.

Influential Sikh religious body Gurmat Sidhant Parcharak Sant Samaj, headed by Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Khalsa, had approached Akal Takht Jathedar seeking major changes in Nanakshahi calendar on the basis of 'Kavi Churamani' Bhai Santokh Singh authored 'Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth.'

The Bikrami calendar, which was rejected by a section of Sikhs by adopting the Nanakshahi calendar, has similar religious days as mentioned in 'Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth.' However, Purewal said those opposing the Nanakshahi calendar were totally ignorant, while adding that the Sant Samaj was a minor section of the Sikh Panth and was not the whole community. "But there is awareness among Sikhs living outside India and they are committed to the Nanakshahi calendar," he said.

Sensing a conspiracy behind raising demand of making major changes in the Nanakshahi calendar, Purewal alleged, "Last time changes were made in the calendar only due to political reasons and for votes. But this time I don't know who is behind it, but everybody knows that BJP had opposed the Nanakshahi calendar."

Supporting Purewal's views, another Sikh scholar Prof Balwant Singh, who was member of the team set up for finalization of Nanakshahi calendar, said, "Sant Samaj members have no scientific reason behind their move. It is their vested interest only that they want to go back to the Bikrami calendar."

Prof Balwant said the Indian calendar had an error and there was a need to correct it. Citing an example, he said, "Baiskahi was celebrated on April 13, 1919 which coincides with the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. But in 2012, Baisakhi was celebrated on April 14 due to an error in the calendar."

Unfortunately Sant Samaj is not based on scientific reason but "broscience". The problem is they are not a minority but a continuing growing majority, meaning bigger and bigger vote banks so will attract power and influence:kudihug: as they have power in the form of followers.

Sant Samaj members should stop raking up controversial issues: Dal Khalsa

The morcha launched by Bhai Gurbakash Singh needs Panth’s attention: H. S. Dhami

Harcharanjit Singh Dhami (President, Dal Khalsa)
Amritsar, Punjab (December 12, 2013): Stressing on Panthic unity at this critical juncture, Dal Khalsa head H S Dhami appealed to leaders of the Sant Samaj to be sensitive towards the Sikh situation and stop raising controversial issues including Nanakshahi calendar that have a potential of creating divisions amongst the community.

He termed the demand made by members of the Sant Samaj before the Jathedar of the Akal Takht to revert to the Bikrami calendar as an attempt to derail the morcha launched by Sikh activist Gurbakash Singh to seek the release of 6 Sikh detainees, who had served their legal prison terms.

In a statement to the media, he said the issue of the calendar has potential to divide the community and the timing chosen by the Sant Samaj to rake it up, smells that “there was more to it than meets the eye”.

He claimed that a large number of youth and Panthic groups were rallying behind the cause of Gurbakash Singh, who is fast unto death since Nov 14. “Wittingly or not, Sant Samaj has brought the controversial issue to fore to divert the attention of the Sikhs from the main issue”.

Detesting the claims of the Sant Samaj leaders that Nanakshahi calendar had created confusion, he said the mixing of Nanakshahi with Bikrami led to the very confusion and division.

While accepting that Sant Samaj members has a right to air their viewpoint on all issues, Dal Khalsa leader said they must wait till the issues raised by Gurbakash Singh’s gets resolved.

If you look at the list of leading members of the Sant Samaj you will see that a critical mass are not even Sikhs. The fact they are headed up by a "Sikh" makes no difference. They have no other intention but to divide the panth, betting that a significant percentage of the panth will fall in line with deras. This is not rocket science.

The purpose in derailing the morcha should be as clear as a newly wiped mirror. Again not rocket science. Before making his politically "deft" pronouncement, that Gurbaksh Singh had not done his homework and there was more to the issue than he had realized, said ATJ was visited by the Badals, including Harisimarat Kaur herself. Akaali Dal (BADAL) rules and has ruled in coalition with BJP with the backing of Sant Samaj. Unsettling the balance of votes not only in Punjab but in all the other states where prisoners are held is the equivalent of spoiling the brew. And now we have one young bhai ji managing to do just that.

The fact of the matter is that they can do whatever they want, and they do. The panth in India has only hard choices. The panth in the diaspora has to stop being "shocked" because we all know what is going on, and have known for more than a decade.

From the earliest article we have posted here at SPN on the matter of the calendar Sant Samaj was identified as the king-maker.
