    Missing woman found dead

Kareen Kaur believed to be victim of hit-and-run accident.

JOHOR BARU: The body of Kareen Kaur, who went missing last Friday, was found beside the North-South Expressway near Kulaijaya.

Fatal misadventure: Kareen is believed to have been knocked down by a lorry along the North-South expressway.

She was believed to be the victim of a hit-and-run accident involving a lorry.
Kulaijaya OCPD Supt Zulkefly Yahya said two reports had been lodged with the police, which could have explained how Kareen, 35, ended up in Kulaijaya after she told family members that she was returning to her hometown in Kluang.

“She took a taxi from Larkin Central on Friday to Kluang. The moment the taxi reached Kulaijaya, she apparently went berserk, causing the driver to stop his vehicle along the expressway.
“He told the police she then jumped out of the car and disappeared into the bushes,” he said here yesterday.

The taxi driver subsequently lodged a report on the matter at the nearest police station, added Supt Zulkefly.

It was earlier reported that Kareen’s father Gurmukh Singh Auter Singh had suspected that his youngest daughter, who sometimes suffered from hallucinations, did not take her medication the day she went missing because she had sounded “a little lost” over the phone.

Kareen had a Master’s in Computer Science and worked as a programmer in Singapore.

Supt Zulkefly said police had received another report from a lorry driver, who believed that he could have hit a woman at KM23 of the expressway at around 11.30pm on Saturday.

The lorry driver, he added, was driving from Johor Baru towards Muar when he saw a woman suddenly dashing across the highway.

“The driver panicked and initially thought that it might have been a ghost.

However, when he stopped near the north-bound Kulaijaya rest area, he noticed bloodstains on his vehicle and immediately lodged a report.

“We rushed our men to the location and found a body there. But we did not find any personal belongings or identification on the body,” he said, adding that a postmortem showed the injuries to be consistent with being hit by a moving vehicle.

Meanwhile, Kareen’s brother Dr Malvinder Singh confirmed the body to be that of his sister.

He said the family remained unsure how she ended up in Kulaijaya.

“We are still in shock over what happened,” he said, expressing his hope that police would further investigate the case.
