A couple of personal observations. 1. Surrender: It is used 96 times in SGGS as per Srigranth.org. 2. Surrendering is used 11 times. I have always felt quite uneasy with its usage in Gurbani sense and Gurmat values given to us in SGGS. Both are used for different words in Gurbani which seems to me loses the real meanings/message of Gurbani. According to the definition from 3 different sources: 1.surrender - definition of surrender by the Free Online Dictionary ... www.thefreedictionary.com/surrender sur•ren•der (s -r n d r). v. sur•ren•dered, sur•ren•der•ing, sur•ren•ders. v.tr. 1. To relinquish possession or control of to another because of demand or compulsion. 2.Surrender - Merriam-Webster Online www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/surrender to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand <surrendered the fort>. b : to give up completely or agree to forgo ... 3.Surrender | Define Surrender at Dictionary.com dictionary.reference.com/browse/surrender to yield (something) to the possession or power of another; deliver up possession of on demand or under duress: to surrender the fort to the enemy; to surrender ... 1. Is Ik Ong Kaar our enemy? 2. Are we in war with Ik Ong Kaar or with the 5 thieves that make us human? 3. Is Ik Ong Kaar is forcing us to “surrender”, the one who is Nirbhau and Nirvair? None of the above makes sense according to Gurmat values. So, in my point of view, the word “Surrender” should be eliminated from the literal translations and be substituted with words like: offer oneself to become a good student-Sikh, shed me-ism, sprout like a lotus from the self-created muck. Members can add their own words according to their own understanding. I understand that some would check the best dictionary in the world called Wkipedia and try to explain what it means in spiritual sense. Sikhi values are not based on the definitions according to Wikipedia but only on Gurmat. 2. Das- This one is translated as Slave which is also demeaning to Gurbani in my opinion. 1.Slave is used 500 times in the SGGS-Srigrang.org. 2.Slavery is used 3 times for two different words. According to the definition from 3 different sources: 1.slave - definition of slave by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus ... www.thefreedictionary.com/slave One bound in servitude as the property of a person or household. 2. One who is abjectly subservient to a specified person or influence: "I was still the slave of ... 2.Slave | Define Slave at Dictionary.com dictionary.reference.com/browse/slave a person who is the property of and wholly subject to another; a bond servant. 2. a person entirely under the domination of some influence or person: a slave to a ... 3.Slave - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/slave a person held in servitude as the chattel of another. 2. : one that is completely subservient to a dominating influence. 3. : a device (as the printer of a computer) ... We all know what slavery stands for and it had been a common practice by the Kings of India and also the invaders to sell people in the public squares as slaves. Slavery is much older in India and it was practiced long before it was practiced in the West. Guru Nanak and all other Nanaks who followed him with the same jyot came to liberate people from tyranny and the psychological burden it created. They were totally against slavery. Mechanical rituals are kinds of slavery of the mind which brings to naught. Sati- A very tangible ritual is starkly sign of slavery. Fighting against injustice what Sikhi is based on makes us The Truth Seekers- The Peace Warriors. Both these names show us that we are not slaves of anyone. Gurbani talks about Ik Ong Kaar being our Miit-ਮੀਤ, our friend and our mate. How can one be a slave to a friend? Das should be translated as – A Seeker, A Student, A Learner- A Sikh Let’s have a conversation about the way Gurbani is being distorted in literal translations and even worse, accepted by us without challenging it. Are we surrendering our Gurmat intellect acting in this manner? Input from all will be very fruitful. Tejwant Singh
