Canada Meet The Participants: Ruby Dhalla, Liberal

Ruby Dhalla - Liberal

At the time Paul Martin asked Ruby Dhalla to run for the Liberals in 2004 her résumé included chiropractor, actress and model. With her win in that election she became the first Sikh woman elected to Parliament, and along with Nina Grewal also became the first Indian-Canadian woman to sit in the House.

Seen as a rising star in the Liberal Party, Ms. Dhalla, 37, has been active with the Grist since she was 14. Having won her riding in 2008 by fewer than 800 votes, it’s likely to be a tough race this year in a re-match against Conservative candidate Parm Gill. The campaign began with a bang as Ms. Dhalla was forced to defend herself against allegations that she billed the Indian government for thousands of dollars worth of expenses as a guest of state there. Mr. Gill is no doubt hoping this, combined with Ms. Dhalla’s public nanny troubles over the last two years, has eroded voter confidence. The Liberals fired back by linking Gill to Immigration Minister Jason Kenney’s ethnic-outreach scandal.

Plain and simple multi-millionaire owner of Canada Steamship Lines, Mr. Martin fancied her! Nothing wrong and no indiscretion implied.
