As a relative of Captain Arnold Nesbitt Matthews HEIC Bengal Army ( 1767-1820 ) I am seeking further information regarding the most intriguing and puzzling period when Captain Matthews was accused of being a Company spy and held by Maharaja Rangit Singh in 1808 . According to Amandeep Singh in his book ‘ The Maharaja, The Spy & The Golden Temple ‘ Matthews although having lost a leg earlier during combat ‘attempted ‘ to infiltrate behind the lines of the Sikh army ‘disguised ‘ as a traveller within a large group en route to Kashmir. Matthews was soon detained & provided with accommodation in the Palace grounds. It also is reported that Matthews only was granted permission to visit and enter the Golden Temple but accompanied by Sada Kaur the mother- in - law of the Maharaja.
i find this tale very odd considering Captain Matthews was considered ‘a spy ‘ from the British Army ( HEIC) . Why was he given so much freedom and what was this relationship with Ranjit Singh?
