AMRITSAR: While anticipating that Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) could scrap the Sikh's own Nanakshahi Calendar adopted by it in 2003, the American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC) has begun worldwide movement to garner support for the Nanakshahi Calendar and initiate a movement to pressurize SGPC against any such possible move.
While talking to TOI over phone from Fremont, California, US on Tuesday, Coordinator of AGPC Dr Pritpal Singh , quoting his highly placed sources, said " We were shocked when we come to know that SGPC is planning to eliminate Nanakshahi Calendar".
Refusing to expose his 'sources' Priptal Singh alleged that there was a conspiracy going on under the influence of RSS to fully eliminate the Sikh's own calendar. While stating that already SGPC had made changes under the influence of RSS in the original Nanakshahi calendar, he said that Sikh's across the globe wouldn't tolerate scrapping of the Nanakshahi Calendar and instead advised SGPC to resort back to the original Nanakshahi Calendar.
"Our highly reliable sources informed that SGPC is under the influence of RSS and has chalked out a plan to bring more changes in Calender which is not acceptable to the Sikhs around the world. '' said President of AGPC Jaswant Singh Hothi while adding that Sikh bodies around the globe would initiate an international campaign and wouldn't allow SGPC to eliminate the Calender.
"We are also writing a letter to Jathedar of Akal Takht against the planned drive of belittling the importance of Sikh's own calendar" he said. He informed that Sikhs living aboard observe Sikh religious days only according to original Paul Singh Purewal authored Nanakshahi Calendar which was approved by Akal Takht and implemented by SGPC in 2003.
"It was unfortunate that certain changes were made in the calendar without consulting the Sikh Diasporas" he said. Pritpal Singh alleged ''There is conspiracy by Sangh Privaar to change the Nanakshahi Calender into the Bikrami Calender and we will oppose this tooth and nail''.
