Hurting Sikh sentiments case: Bhaniara gets 3 yrs in jail, released on bail

AMBALA/CHANDIGARH: Ambala district courts Monday sentenced controversial Baba Piara Singh Bhaniara 3 years in jail, on charges of hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs and sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib. He has been released on bail.

Seven others had also been convicted under the same charges. All were ordered to be present in the court on May 13 when the court from pronounce the quantum of sentence.

There were a total of 13 accused in the case registered in October 2001 under sections 452, 329, 120-B, 153 and 295-A of IPC, out of which five were acquitted. All were accused of damaging and setting fire to Guru Granth Sahib.In 2001, Bhaniara wrote a book ‘Bhavsagar Granth’ describing his miracles which offended the Sikhs who alleged that the Baba was equating himself with Sikh gurus.

An organization Khalsa Action Committee headed by Charanjit Singh Channi disrupted a religious congregation at one of Bhaniara’s followers in Ludhiana in 2001. His book was snatched and damaged.As a result, his followers burned the copies of Guru Granth Sahib.Bhaniara was arrested in October 2001 and his book was banned by the government.

Dal Khalsa and several other Sikh organizations called for an agitation and reportedly demolished Baba’s centre.In 2003, a man named Gopal Singh attempted to stab Bhaniara, when he was in Ambala to appear in the court for his involvement in burning of Sikh scriptures.

Gurdeep Singh Rana, a member of Babbar Khalsa was arrested in an attempt to assassinate Bhaniara using a bomb in Janaury 2005.

Here is what the story boils down to.

1. Bhaniara wrote a book ‘Bhavsagar Granth’ describing his miracles which offended the Sikhs who alleged that the Baba was equating himself with Sikh gurus.

This and a dozen stories like it a day come through on news alert services about Sikhs and Sikhism. I receive alerts from 4 different sources. What do we have in front of us? Impersonating Sikh Gurus, disrupting religious services, snatching and damaging books, burning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, agitation, destruction of property, attempted stabbing, using a bomb, attempted assassination (alleged). Much of this the result of "gaining the upper hand" "getting even" and "settling scores."

Where is there a single trace of Guru Nanak or the widely heralded "martial race?" Long after the situation is out of control the judicial system (code: branch of GOI) weighs in on what is common thuggery. The tragedy is that the thuggery carries the brand of "Sikh." Why are any amazed that the press and government sources take this and run with it when time comes to discredit the panth at home and abroad?

Shall we now move on to a study of the DT/Badal controversy regarding Bindhranwale and the memorial plaques?

There are lines from Gurbani which emphasize that respect for Guru is so high that it cannot be brought down by any miscreant. Yet we have to react to such things. I think neighbor's boundary should be respected, don't cross over. But if someone barges in, don't send them back empty handed.

This shows how this news is curried up with garam masala against the Sikhs:

Our Gurus did not sell any snake oil that created miracles. Sikhii is not about miracles. However, these Babas have nothing but only miracles to sell to the ignorant.

One thing I do not get it is this ire and anger by these so called Sikhs who use violence rather than Gurnat dialogue to resolve the issues.

The main problem is that these Babas use their Sikhi look to mislead people. If they looked like Sai Baba or Rajneesh, no one would bother.

And then some people tell us Gurus were not true prophets because they didn't perform any miracles!
