The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed concern after the Sikh community in Lahore was prevented from performing their religious celebrations by the Lahore police and Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) officials.

The Lahore police and ETPB officials took the action after the followers of Islamic organization Dawat-e-Islami demanded that the Sikh community must be stopped from conducting their religious ceremonies before the Muslim holy day of Shab-e-Barat, which was observed on Sunday.

The HRCP called the restriction shocking and a violation of fundamental rights.

"While extremist element's barring religious minorities from their worship places in Pakistan no longer surprises anyone, but the ETPB's decision to deny Sikhs entry into gurdwara Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh in Lahore on the eve of Shab-e-Barat is scandalous," the Daily Times quoted HRCP, as saying in a statement.
