CHANDIGARH: Sikh couples in Haryana will now be able to get their marriages registered under the Anand Marriage Act instead of the Hindu Marriage Act.

Fulfilling the long-pending demand of Sikhs, Haryana government on Wednesday announced the formation of rules to register Anand Karaj, the Sikh marriage ceremony, solemnized by the community members.

The fresh move seems to be an attempt by Bhupinder Singh Hooda government to woo the community members ahead of upcoming assembly polls in October. Political observers feel that the community members have a significant say in 30 assembly seats of Sirsa, Kurukshetra, Ambala and Karnal Lok Sabha constituencies and a presence in Faridabad and Gurgoan.

With around 15% inhabitants, Haryana has the second largest population of Sikhs in the country after Punjab, said Didar Singh Nalvi, president of Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (HSGPC) (ad hoc).

Welcoming the fresh move, Nalvi said, "It's a belated but right decision."

Sikh groups have been maintaining that members of the community face problems abroad as their certificates are issued under the Hindu Marriage Act.

"The officials ask the members of my community how their wedding was registered under the Hindu Marriage Act when they belong to Sikh religion," said Nalvi, who has been fighting for separate SGPC for Haryana for the past 14 years.

"It seems that the government has taken this decision keeping in view the next assembly elections. But still, we are happy," he added.

Echoing similar sentiments, former president of Punjab and Haryana Bar Association Kulbir Singh Dhaliwal said, "We were waiting for such a move since long. Such issues have emotional impact on the mindset of every individual, who wants the law should recognize their way of wedding."

Although the Anand marriage law was enacted in 1909, there was no provision for registration of marriages, which were registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The parliament had passed the law allowing Sikhs to register their marriages under the Anand Marriage Act instead of the Hindu Marriage Act in 2012, but Haryana has issued the notification now.

Meanwhile, the new rules, which have been implemented with immediate effect, would be called Haryana Anand Marriages Registration Rules, 2014

Yes Gyaniji, but technically Sikh marriages come under the Hindu Marriage Act, as the judiciary considered Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism under the larger umbrella of Hinduism till now. Individual marriage acts for these communitues are aimed at removing this anomaly.

When will the majority community, whose M.P.s influence the legislature, see ground realities that Sikhs, Jainis ans Buddhists are NOT Hindus. Just a few weeks ago, 80,000 Hindu-Dalits of (so called) lower castes took oath of having "No Faith in Rama and Krishana" and converted to Buddhism. If Buddhism is a part of Hinduism then "why the need of conversion to Buddhism"?

Even Bhimrao Ambedkar, architect of the Indian Constitution, had renounced Hinduism and embraced Buddhist faith.

It is an attempt to re-absorb break away denominations. Buddhism at one point became the state religion of India. The Hindu elite reacted by declaring Buddha to be an incarnation of Vishnu. Some Hindus even go so far as to declare Christianity and Islam as a part of Hinduism. It is their tactic to be intentionally amorphous, in order to absorb all challengers.

Hopefully some intellectual Sikhs can change the Indian constitution to see Sikhism as a DISTINCT religion for once for all.

Sometimes I wonder if those political leaders and pundits understand their own religion. A lot of practices blanketed under the term Hinduism actually contradict what is written in their texts. I guess this is what happens when a select group of people have a monopoly over knowledge. They control how it is interpreted and disseminated. This is why Buddhists and Sikhs felt the need to distance themselves from that ideology. To embrace it would mean opening Pandora's Box, after we worked so hard to put the demons in.

I am not advocating Sikhs to embrace Hinduism. I would be the last person to do so. What i said is that it is their meaning-less utterances. The other day Subrmaniam Swami had said that India is a Hindu country (disregarding the Indian Constitution which says India is a country of multifarious beliefs and a secular country) and when the journo asked him 'what about Muslims' and he had replied they are also Hindus. I had asked him if Hindus would give their daughters in marriage to Muslims since you say they are Hindus. There was no reply. It is only "BAK BAK" With such unholy thoughts and aspirations the Moguls perished and who-so-ever thinks of decimating Sikhs would meet the same fate. Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Sikh Panth are eternal.
