The state has associations with Sikhism. Legend says the religion's founder, Guru Nanak, travelled through the state to Mount Kailash in Tibet in 1516, and there are depressions said to be his footprints.
In 1968 a young Sikh sepoy drowned in Sikkim and visitors flock to a shrine built to him.
