A native of India who still sports the iconic turban and beard of his Sikh religion, Makkar is the son of college professors who in the 1990s came to Western Michigan University and later left for the lure of business ownership.
Satpal Makkar was a Fulbright scholar who taught criminal justice and political science. His wife, Kulmeet, taught natural sciences. But they opted to stay stateside as entrepreneurs instead of returning to their leadership posts at Indian universities.
