Two arrested in Delhi gangrape case, doctors say 'never seen such brutality'
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times

New Delhi, December 18, 2012

http://www.hindustantimes.com/India...ever-seen-such-brutality/Article1-974240.aspx

The 23-year-old gangrape victim is battling for life in New Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. She has severe genital, abdominal and head injuries. Doctors treating her claimed the woman, who is on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, is “very critical”.

Late Monday, police claim to have arrested two accused in the rape case even as doctors claiming they had never seen a victim of sexual assault subjected to “such brutality”.

TV reports suggest third arrest has been made in the case.

“We performed several life-saving procedures on her within an hour of her being brought to the hospital around 3am. Her injuries were severe and she has lost a lot of blood,” said a senior doctor at the hospital.

The victim had reportedly lost nearly a litre of blood and had severe internal injuries.

“Her intestines are damaged; the blood supply to her intestines has been severed. It looks like she was assaulted by a blunt object as her face also bore injury marks,” said the doctor.

The life-saving surgery lasted for more than four hours in the morning. Doctors tried to repair her intestines and other damaged organs and tissues.

“Her injuries are fatal. Though we are pumping her with the strongest of antibiotics possible, sooner or later gangrene is bound to set in. She is in a very bad shape,” the doctor added.

The medical staff present at the hospital, when she was brought in, described her condition as “horrifying”.

“She was in a pool of blood but conscious. There was blood all over her face. I cannot even imagine the agonising pain she must be in,” said a nursing assistant in the hospital who wished to remain anonymous.

Sources in the hospital told Hindustan Times that it seemed at least four people were involved in the crime, as different semen samples were found on her.

The victim, who is a paramedical student, was doing internship at one of the private hospitals in the city.

Delhi gang-rape case: bus driver was often drunk, picked fights

http://www.ndtv.com/article/cities/...s-driver-was-often-drunk-picked-fights-307909

New Delhi: The case of a young woman, battered and then gang-raped on a bus in Delhi, has incensed and stirred India, with protests across the country demanding an urgent change in laws, the attitude of the police, and a swift trial for the six men accused of Sunday night's heinous crime.

Four of those six men have been arrested, among them a driver named Ram Singh, age 33, who was often drunk, according to the police. For ten months, he was assigned to drive a bus which was owned by a private company and hired by a school.

On Sunday night, he was not driving that bus; his brother, Mukesh, was. The police says the brothers and four of their friends decided to go "on a joyride" in their off-duty hours. They posed as the sort of chartered bus that is often used as public transport in Delhi.

The bus had tinted windows and curtains, banned in Delhi. But it was not stopped as it moved through a series of police check points.

On board, a medical student and her friend were being assaulted with vicious force. They had finished watching a film and boarded the bus to go home. Ram Singh and his friends allegedly taunted the woman, asking her why she was out late with a man. Her friend, who works for a software firm, intervened. The men turned on him with an iron rod. The girl then tried to protect her friend, infuriating the assaulters who decided to punish her. First, they hit her. Then they raped her. The bus kept driving.

Ram Singh refused to participate in an identification parade at a Delhi jail today, though his brother Mukesh acquiesced and has been identified by the victim's friend who was with her on the bus.

The police says that its investigation reveals that Ram Singh was ill-tempered, "criminally minded", and was often drunk after work. He has four brothers; three of them left the family home because he mistreated them. He then moved to a small one-room accommodation which he shared with Mukesh.

In 2009, he had a serious accident while driving a bus and an iron rod had to be inserted in one of his arms. The police say that the injury resulted in an inferiority complex and made him more prone to picking up fights. His wife reportedly died three years ago after a kidney failure.

Delhi gang rape case: Victim stable, conscious, doctors say
PTI | Dec 20, 2012, 12.19 PM IST

NEW DELHI: Having undergone a surgery to remove her gangrenous intestine, the 23-year-old paramedical student gang-raped on Sunday passed an "uneventful night" and is "stable, alert and conscious", doctors treating her said on Thursday.

"The night after the elective exploratory laparotomy, was uneventful. In the morning she was in stable condition. She continues to remain in ICU on life support, her vital parameters like blood pressure, urine output, respiratory rate were within acceptable limits," said Dr B D Athani, medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.

"She is making an attempt to breathe on her own and we are about to start to give her total parenteral nutrition (TPN), meaning providing nutrition through intravenous route, as she won't be able to take her feed from her mouth because of the intestinal loss," he said while issuing her medical bulleting.

The doctors, however, said that there were some signs of reduction of the total count (of the blood cells) and there was mild diminution of platelet count, which was 41,000 this morning, "otherwise she is alert and conscious".

Athani said infection in this case was one of the impending danger, impending complication. "It is one of the expected, anticipated danger and to avert that we have been giving her antibiotics from day one in adequate amount. As you know that the intestine was in a state of gangrenous condition and there are perennial wounds also," Athani said.

Asked about her being removed for ventilator, the doctors said, "She had always been on ventilator. On 18th morning she was on partial support but she had been on ventilator support. We have made no attempt to take her off the ventilator support, that is not something urgently required to be done."

The doctors said their "immediate and foremost concern" was to get her out of intensive care unit (ICU) and make her stable.

Lauding the girl's spirit, Athani said she has an immense fighting spirit as despite sustaining such grievous injuries, "she had been stable and remained almost alert and withstood to, apart from assault, the all exploratory interventions."

"She is a brave girl and withstanding right from the day of assault till today everything."

Asked if she was communicating, Athani said, "She is conscious but not able to speak as there is a tube inside for ventilation as she is on ventilator. She is able to communicate with gestures. We are not disturbing her again and again to communicate and we know that she is alert."

Doctors, who have been treating her, have termed her case as "extremely unusual and extremely rare" and said they have never seen such grave injuries to the intestine in cases of sexual assault.

Delhi gang-rape case: missing sixth attacker arrested from village in Bihar

http://www.ndtv.com/article/cheat-s...ttacker-arrested-from-village-in-bihar-308398

New Delhi: The 23-year-old medical student who was brutally raped in a moving bus in Delhi on Sunday, has been taken off the ventilator and is attempting to speak now. All six men who allegedly raped Amanat (not her real name) are now in custody. The Delhi High Court has asked the police to share the names of the cops who failed to stop the bus, which had tinted glasses, as it moved through a series of check points in Delhi while the young woman was being tortured in it.

Here are the latest developments in the investigation:

The police said that sixth accused person, who was on the run, was today arrested in Bihar. They had earlier in the day arrested one of the accused who were on the run. He is a minor. Four of the six men accused of raping the woman - the bus driver Ram Singh, his brother, Mukesh, Vinay, a gym assistant and Pawan or Kalu, a fruitseller - had been arrested earlier in the week. They have been also been charged with attempt to murder among other things.

The Home Secretary and Delhi Police chief said today that they were "hopeful that based on circumstantial evidence, oral evidence and forensic evidence we will be able to secure conviction." They said they would seek a swift trial and Life Imprisonment for the accused. The Delhi Police has submitted a status report on its investigations in the High Court today.

The two top officials detailed security measures taken in Delhi. Cops, they said, had removed tinted films from the windows of 464 vehicles in Delhi this week and all vehicles coming into the city from other states that had with tinted glasses were being turned back.

They said there were plainclothes cops out on the streets and also on buses to prevent loitering and misbehaviour. "This is going to be a place where any goondagardi or dadagiri will be swiftly punished," Home Secretary RK Singh said. He also said that Global Positioning Service or GPS will be added to all buses and autos, adding that a chargesheet will be filed soon.

The top officials also said that a large number of contract buses that were found to be plying illegally had been impounded, their licences cancelled and these would be auctioned after receiving orders from court. Buses, autorickshaw and taxis had been instructed to display licence numbers on vehicles, they said. Auto and taxi drivers have to be verified by the police and wear badges that indicate they are authorised to be driving, officials said.

The young woman is in stable condition but her platelet count has dropped further. Doctors said they are worried about a possible infection developing in her liver. She has been through multiple surgeries and almost her entire intestines have had to be removed.

Doctors at Safdurjang Hospital have allowed the Delhi Police to record the victim's statement. The cops have been asked to prepare a written questionnaire, which she will respond to either in writing or through gestures. She has reportedly asked for her mother to be present when her statement is recorded.

One of the men accused, Mukesh, was identified yesterday by the victim's male friend, who was with her when the incident happened. The young man, who too was beaten on the head repeatedly with an iron rod on Sunday evening, reportedly took a minute to identify the accused out of 11 men who were paraded before him at Tihar Jail yesterday. Three of them, including Mukesh, have also confessed to the crime in court. Ram Singh has refused to participate in a test identification.

A parliamentary panel will meet on December 27 to discuss if changes need to be made in the law on rape and will make suggestions to the government for the government. The Union Home Secretary and top Delhi Police officers have been ordered to attend the meeting.

Angry demonstrations continue in Delhi; loud protests were held today outside Rashtrapati Bhawan, at the hospital where the victim is being treated and at other places. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has announced the setting up of a round-the-clock control room for women in distress and has promised a stringent law to curb sexual assault on women. Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaisingh has been asked to prepare a draft bill.
