Defamation suit filed against Canadian MP
November 28, 2010

PNS | Chandigarh

A defamation suit against Canada’s Vancouver Member of Parliament (MP) Ujjal Dosanjh was filed in a Chandigarh court on Saturday for allegedly hurting the sentiments of Sikh community by calling the second and third generation of Sikhs settled in Canada pro-Khalistani during his visit to India this year recently.

The petition was filed by Avtar Singh, a Canada-born Sikh youth, at present living in Mohali. He alleged that during a Press conference in September this year at Sector 28 Himachal Bhawan, Dosanjh had cautioned the Canadian Government about the second and third generations of Sikh immigrants alleging that Sikh youth in Canada were propagating Khalistan.

The petitioner has requested the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Jasbir Singh Sidhu to summon Dosanjh under Section 500/501 of the Indian Penal Code. The court has fixed the next hearing for December 10 when the complainant would present evidences in support of his complaint.

The complainant has also stated that Vancouver MP during his press briefing in September had also said that the fundamentalists propagating the cause of Khalistan in Canada were doing damage rather than any good to the cause of Sikhs.

The 25-year old Avtar Singh, who is in India these days to meet his family and friends, has alleged that Dosanjh defamed the image of Sikh youth, living in Canada and abroad by giving the statement.
