Construction of Bluestar Memorial complete

Thursday, April, 25 2013 - 13:46

AMRITSAR:
The construction of controversial Operation Bluestar Memorial has been completed. The memorial has been constructed before its due date which was late May. Akhand Path ceremony today began in the memorial, which will be thrown open to devotees on June 6, anniversary of Operation Bluestar.

Bluestar was a military operation ordered by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to flush out Khalistani militants including Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale from the precincts of Akal Takht and Golden Temple Complex in June 1984.

The construction of the memorial had been entrusted to Damdami Taksal currently headed by Harnam Singh Khalsa. Damdami Taksal is a Sikh seminary, situated at Mehta Chowk, around 40 kms from Amritsar. The seminary was once led by Bhindranwale, killed in Operation Bluestar. The memorial, a one room gurdwara is 31 feet wide, 21 feet high and in the shape of an octagon.

The memorial construction generated lot of heat last year October after Bluestar veteran Lt Gen KS Brar (retd) was stabbed in London. Various political parties including Congress had condemned the construction 28 years after the Army operation.

Parkash Singh Badal led government had to face a lot of criticism over the memorial but later Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had attempted to part ways from the memorial saying it was being constructed by SGPC, a religious organization. He had also later clarified that the memorial will be only a gurdwara and not house pictures of any one killed in Bluestar.

The spot where Guru Granth Sahib will be placed and recited in the gurdwara is engraved a couplet of Bhagat Kabir:
“Soora so pehchaniye jo lare deen ke het, purja-purja kat mare, kab hu na chhade khet.”

(Brave is the one who fight for truth and justice with honor and valor. He may be cut apart, piece by piece, but he never leaves the field of battle.)
