When Daljeet Singh Sidhu wanted to introduce his three-year-old son to Sikh heroes and history, he was not at a loss of words. But what he did not have, was a story that his boy could see, feel and later read. That’s when it struck Sidhu; that Sikh history has many heroes, but no graphics. So after 12 years in the US, he packed his bags and moved back to India to chronicle Sikh history, its great gurus and warriors and present them in the comics format. That’s how www.sikhcomics.com, a Sikh comics project, was born.

“Children in India and abroad are oblivious to our rich heritage. Therefore, the comics appeal to people everywhere. Also, initially our target audience was children but our first two all-colour titles in English have received a great response from adults too,” says city-based Sidhu as he flips through the stories of Baba Deep Singh, the Sikh martyr and scholar.

Scripted by Sidhu, the basis of the stories are books by historians like Bhai Veer Singh, Tirlochan Singh and Satbir Singh. “The facets of Sikh history have to be authentic,” says Sidhu, who hopes to finalise the title in a month, and has planned 20 illustrated titles on history and five volumes in the same format on Guru Nanak. Animation projects based on the comics, and later some fiction are also on the list. “There is a huge demand for translating these into Hindi and Punjabi and we’re looking forward to it,” says Sidhu.

This looks like Amar Chitra Katha... the series from which I learnt so much of history and mythology. During my post graduation, my loving dad literally stopped me from reading those kidding books I grew so fond of, but well, he was the one who initiated me into that... haha... we used to anxiously wait for his package containing those books in school days.

It is great to see such a focused initiative for sikh history in pictures/comics.

Cheers.

Arvind ji, Unfortunately the accompanying picture with the news item on sikhphilosophy.net is from ACK and not from comics published by us. They are not like amar chitra Katha at all but have 100x better graphics and stories are authentic and free from the rightwing jan sang bias of Ananta Pai. To check out the samples please visit http://www.sikhcomics.com. Thanks

Dssidhu ji, is this your work? What a great idea! Best of luck to you.

I am curious, how will you make sure that children know which comics are history and which are fiction?

Hi Annie, Yes. These comics are being published by me.
Works of fiction will very clearly mention the same in the beginning of the comic. We are taking great pains to ensure that all comic books based on Sikh history are authentic by basing the script of these books solely on the works of noted historians like Bhai Veer Singh, Bhai Sahib Singh, Bhai Tirlochan Singh, Principal Satbir Singh. For more information please visit us at http://www.sikhcomics.com. Gur Fateh!

You know veer ji, my problem is twofold. I cannot upload a pic from your site without purchasing a comic book. Even on purchase I do not know if a pic upload would be a copyright violation.

Yes, I looked for something more authentic. Laziness was not my error here. We are leaving the links to your commercial site...something not ordinarily permitted, so members can chose for themselves. If you send me a comic image from your collection, I will definitely change the picture.
