Twenty-nine people succumbed to the intense cold wave in North India on Tuesday as temperatures dropped to sub-zero levels at many places in the region.

Delhiites froze under chilly winds and the biting cold with the minimum temperature plunging to 3.3 degrees Celsius. Though Tuesday’s minimum was up by almost a degree from the previous day, icy winds forced many people to stay indoors during morning hours. Tuesday’s minimum was four degrees below normal level at this time of the season, said the weatherman. The maximum temperature was 15.5.

Kashmir Valley continued to reel under intense cold with temperatures plummeting further as Srinagar recorded the season’s lowest of minus 5.5 degrees. The fringes of Dal Lake and other water bodies were frozen due to a sharp fall in the night temperature over the past couple of days owing to clear skies.

With the mercury dipping to sub-zero levels at some places, severe cold conditions prevailed in Uttar Pradesh, claiming 24 more lives in the past 24 hours.

Reports reaching here said that five people each died of cold in Unnao and Barabanki; three each in Mahoba and Chitrakot; two each in Deoria, Lalitpur and Mau; and one each in Firozabad and Hathras. One person died at Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh.

According to a weather office report, the mercury dipped to sub-zero levels at a number of places with Kanpur recording minus 1.1 degrees, eight less than normal, followed by Agra at minus 1 and Ghazipur and Lucknow at minus 0.2.

Reports from Bareilly said the city saw chilly winds aggravating the problems of the people, who witnessed a day colder than the night with the maximum temperatures hovering around 7.8 degrees. The maximum temperatures were below normal by six to 13 degrees in the State. Cold wave conditions prevailed over most parts of the State.

Four persons died in different parts of Uttarakhand as people in Dehra Dun experienced the coldest day so far this winter with the mercury dropping half a degree below freezing point.

Residents of the State capital shivered at minus 0.5 degrees as they woke up to a sunny but windswept morning, the coldest of the season in many years.

There was no let-up in the biting cold wave sweeping Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with Narnaul registering sub-zero temperatures.

Narnaul in Haryana, where the minimum temperature of minus 3 on Monday was the lowest since 1969, registered a low of minus 0.7 degree on Tuesday, six notches below normal, the weatherman said.

Chandigarh, where Monday’s maximum of 6.1 had broken all previous records, experienced the season’s coldest night on Tuesday as the minimum dropped further to 1.5, down five notches.

Biting cold conditions continued to affect normal life in Rajasthan, where Churu recorded night temperature below zero degree Celsius for the third consecutive day. — PTI
