Clergy oppose planned Koran burning

Published: Sept. 5, 2010 at 2:53 PM

HOUSTON, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Religious leaders from more than a half-dozen faiths held an interfaith symposium in Houston to condemn a Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Koran.

About 120 people attended the symposium at the Baitus Samee Mosque, and heard speakers from Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Sikh, Zoroastrian, Christian and Muslim clergy discuss the sanctity of religious books, The Houston Chronicle reported.

It was in response to an announcement by the Dove World Outreach Center's plan to burn copies of the Muslim holy book to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. The Florida-based organization said it would hold an event called "Burn a Koran Day" on the evening of Sept. 11.

"Even if it is a human document merely inspired by encounters of the divine, or generations of my people's wisdom passed down and kept sacred, it is still sacred," Rabbi Jonathan Siger told the Houston audience.

The non-denominational church in Gainesville is known for posting "Islam is of the Devil" signs on its lawn in 2009.

"Islam is a very oppressive religion, and the Koran is definitely a dangerous book," said Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center. "We want to send a clear message to radical Muslims … we have a Constitution, and we hope to uphold it."

The church was denied a burning permit by Gainesville authorities, but said members still plan to burn "a couple hundred Korans," to commemorate Sept. 11, the newspaper said.

Islam and Koran created wedge between the communities and it hate to all non Muslims. Now they try to befool the peoples by different interpretations those are wrong and could not match with their practices. They are violent, barbaric and hostile and terrorist by nature.

I oppose this book burning, but not because I have any respect for the islamic heresy.

Intolerance ought never to be condoned. It is true that muslims act in eually or more intolerant ways. They kill Sikhs, Christians and members of other religions. They burn Gurudwaras, churches and do their best to extinguish all non islamic faiths in the countries they control and profane. But it is not a Christian response to sink to islam's abysmal level.

Mr Jones is wrong. But I sympathise with him and many other Americans who saw the horrors of Sept 9th 2001 and lost friends and relatives.

He should think again and try to come up with a more appropriate and dignified way of remembering the dead and rebuking the misguided and deluded followers of the so-called prophet.

These type of things are expected. On one hand muslims want to construct mosque near ground zero in the name of secularism, which is a sensitive issue for many Americans on the on the on the other hand they don't even allow non muslims to freely practice their religions in many muslim countries in the name of Sharia.

I am no fan of Islam but I am not keen on tarring every muslim with the same brush either

Yes there are terrorists, yes they are Taliban who do dreadful things, Yes I find aspects of Shariah Law brutal and cruel

But I will also assume there are a lot of good Muslims out there who don't engage in or support any of the above activities

In my humble opinion, the book burning is a blatant insult, which will incite a hostile response and the so called man of the cloth responsible deserves any retribution that comes his wayswordfight

Dear Kanwardeep Ji
Two wrongs don't make a right

I am not saying that what the person is doing right but if in a religion there are people who don't respect other religions then there could be people in other religions who may believe in *** for tat theory,so I don't think this issue
should be big Deal for world as more this issue will be discussed the more skeleletons of past will arise and it will be more harmful for muslims.
