simple question,

Can the brain remember the intensity of pain and happiness that occurred in the past?

Our mind is able to remember the moments when pain and happiness occurred but as both can only be felt in the present moments, these happenings in the past do bring tears and smiles when remembered in the present. The pain is more internalised and so is happiness.
