London, United Kingdom (January 21, 2014): According to information shared by the Sikh Federation UK, British MP Tom Watson has tabled a question in British Parliament [t]o ask the British Prime Minister, if the review into events in Amritsar in 1984 will examine the role played by Gary Sazena and R.N. Kao of the Research and Analysis Wing of the Indian secret service; when each man visited the UK at any time; whether any man received training in the UK; and what the nature was of intelligence provided to those individuals from the Government.

Another question has been tabled [t]o ask the British Prime Minister, when he expects the review into the events in Amritsar in 1984 to be completed; if he will publish all withheld files on the matter that were not placed in the National Archives under the 30 Year Rule; and if copies of that review will be placed in the Library.

Tom Watson has tabled another question [t]o ask the British Prime Minister, if he will place in the Library a copy of the correspondence dated 3 February 1984 from the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to the then Prime Minister proposing a response to the Indian government’s request for advice on their plans for the Golden Temple; and if he will make a statement.

Sikh MP’s meeting with Cabinet Secy sparks row

Prime Minister David Cameron directed his Cabinet Secretary Jeremy Heywood to probe the facts behind claims of British collusion in the operation that emerged as part of recently declassified documents.

Britain’s only Sikh MP, Paul Uppal, outed a meeting with Heywood on the issue, triggering questions over why only the Conservative Party politician was being allowed access. “On Monday night I am actually going to go and see Sir Jeremy Heywood with some other Sikhs, just to impress on him the level of sentiment and how sensitive this is,” the Wolverhampton MP told the Sikh Television Channel last week.

“It is important we take the politics out of this…but I have wanted to go and see the people right at the centre of this to impress upon them how important it is that we move urgently and we get to the truth,” Uppal said.

This to me is a very important response to a very curious report. If there is any benefit of the doubt to be given to the current government in Westminster, it frays easily in light of the manner of disposing of the inquiry. It seems shifty. Could I be interpreting government actions to hastily?

Sikh Federation: Amritsar review too narrowly focused

Last updated Tue 4 Feb 2014

William Hague

The chairman of the Sikh Federation wrote a letter to the Prime Minister in which he said he was "hugely disappointed" by the 1984 Amritsar massacre inquiry's "narrow terms".

We are dismayed the terms of the review were only formally made available almost three weeks after the review was announced and only days before an announcement of the results of the review are expected in Parliament.

It appears the review has looked at a narrow period and not covered the period in the latter half of 1984 and may not have addressed some of the concerns raised by UK politicians in the last three weeks, e.g. threat of sanctions by India against the UK, Germany, Canada and USA towards the end of 1984 for sympathising with Sikhs in the Diaspora.

From the outset you have emphasised the need for transparency, but the significant delay in sharing the terms and that they appear to have been changed for political reasons does not bode well with such assertions and your emphasis on the speed of the review.

– Bhai Amrik Singh, chairman of the Sikh Federation
