The Coalition's summer internship program allows students to further the mission and vision of the Sikh Coalition by helping to achieve legal victories, as well as educating and empowering the Sikh community. Our interns have the opportunity to gain hands on experience with a non-profit organization and will be participating in groundbreaking work for the Sikh community. Undergraduate and graduate students that apply should be hard-working, enthusiastic, self-motivated, flexible, and dedicated to protecting and advocating for the civil and human rights of all individuals.

"I never fully appreciated the work and dedication of the Sikh Coalition staff until I worked with them as an Operations Intern. Whether it was creating an organizational intranet or lobbying members of Congress to allow Sikhs in the Army - I knew my work was benefiting the Sikh community. But most rewarding of all was seeing our efforts come to fruition and knowing I helped shape the Sikh experience for our community."

- Amandeep Singh, Summer 2009 Intern

Time Commitment
During the summer, we require a commitment of 5 days or 40 hours a week for a minimum of ten weeks at the Sikh Coalition's New York City & Washington DC offices.

ADVOCACY (New York City & Washington, DC) - From its campaign to integrate the U.S. Armed Forces to its promotion of contemporary civil rights issues in such diverse places as the public policy blogosphere, interfaith media, and Capitol Hill, The Sikh Coalition is rapidly emerging as a leading voice in the post-9/11 civil rights movement.

We are offering two advocacy internships, which will allow you the opportunity to work closely with the Sikh Coalition's Director of Programs in New York City or the Coalition's Director of Law & Policy in Washington DC.

EDUCATION (New York City) - If you are interested in educating the greater community on who Sikhs are and creating a positive image for Sikhs in society, this internship might be right for you. Recent projects include working with the Department of Education on curriculum development and training new leaders for our Sikh Presenters Course.

Summer Stipend
Advocacy summer interns who complete their commitment with the Sikh Coalition will receive a $500 - $1000 stipend, depending on experience. All other summer interns who complete their commitment will receive a $500 stipend.

How to apply
Interns are selected through a competitive process. Each applicant is required to submit the following to internship@sikhcoalition.org:

1. A cover letter stating for which internship you are applying and the reasons you would like to intern at the Sikh Coalition and;
2. A current resume

The application deadline is May 1, 2010. Summer internships are highly competitive. Please apply early.

Class Credit and/or Work Study
In the past, some interns have been able receive class credit for their work at the Coalition. We will be happy to coordinate with your school in providing the necessary documents for these requirements.

Don't wait to become a part of history, and work for the betterment of the Sikh community!
