Chandigarh, Feb. 9: A new-born girl wrapped in woollens was found abandoned in the Golden Temple complex with a letter, purportedly written by the mother, requesting that the infant be looked after.​

“We have no option but to raise the girl,” SGPC secretary Dalmegh Singh said from Amritsar, alluding to the appeal to Avtar Singh Makkar, who heads the body responsible for the upkeep of Sikh shrines.​

An SGPC official said the important thing to realise was “fate and her mother had willed the child to live” in a state where aborting girl children was rampant.​

The girl was found on Thursday in a place called Dukh Bhanjan Beri where devotees bow before taking a dip in the temple pond.​

Officials said the discovery of the baby inside the temple complex was significant. “Instead of being killed, the infant was left inside the temple in the care of God,” an SGPC source said.​

Many gurdwaras now keep cradles where parents can leave baby girls instead of killing them. There have been demands within the SGPC to make couples take a vow at the time of marriage not to abort girl children in the womb.​

Punjab has the lowest sex ratio in the country. The declining ratio, especially in the newborn-to-six age group — 875 girls per 1,000 boys in 1991, and 793 per 1,000 in 2001 — shows girls are still seen as a burden on families.​

The Sikh rehat maryada (code of conduct) forbids believers from having any relationship with those who kill their daughters. The SGPC is also thinking of ostracising those guilty of female foeticide.​

The parents who do not wish to keep their daughters should give them to gurudwara's so someone could adopt them or gurudwara's themselves should open orphanages for these girls

i think this is a beautiful idea. we have something similar here in the US... if a mother cannot care for her child, she may leave the child at any church or fire station or hospital and no questions will be asked. no charges will be against the mother. this helps prevent distressed mothers from abandoning or killing their infants.

I agree with it instead of doing female foeiticide.People should give them to gurudwara's
And NRI's, rich sikhs should come and activily support this either by financially supporting them or by adopting them

I think having facilities in Gurudwara's where people leave their baby's (boy or girl [but mostly girl]) is s ood idea considering the alternative>>>foetacide!

I wouldn't hesitate in adopting an unwanted baby girl from Punjab BUT the idiotic Indian Authorities put that much buerocracy in the way that it is near impossible.

There needs to be a fianancial incentive to have daughters. We have a Child Allowance here in the UK, there should be a daughters alloawance, coupled with free education for girl's, double the costs for educating boys, have a tax on every boy that you have too. In other word disincetive-sise having boys.

There are financial incentive's but they are not working and they are never going to work
The reason is very simple that in Indian society a girl's parents are always a loser they can't take her income .they have to bear all expenses of marriage then dowry.Also business class desperately want someone to help them And unfortunately business is totally dominated by men and the environment is not even good for girls to enter.If there is any kind of property dispute then you also need boys because they will protect your property much better than law.The income of boy is not the income of his but of entire family.in other words they are the best insurance policy for family.
