Melbourne, July 20 (IBNS): In a latest attack on Indians in Australia, a 24-year-old student was allegedly physically assaulted by a group when he had tried to defend another fellow Indian who was being beaten up.
The attack took place on Monday when the victim, Bharat Thapar, was attacked when he tried to save another Indian from being beaten up, media reports said on Tuesday.
Police took Bharat to the hospital, but two eyewitnesses, including the boy whom Bharat saved, alleged that the attackers were let go by the police.
Bharat reportedly sustained critical injuries and is not in a state to narrate the incident to the police. Doctors attending him said that it could be at least a week before he recovered enough to give his statement.
Bharat had moved to Australia about three years ago and had recently completed studies at a college here.
Indians had been routinely targeted in Australia, leading to political intervention at the highest levels from India, asking Australian authorities to ensure the safety of Indians studying or working there.
