Akalis disrupt Parliament over ’84 riots

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 29
Emotions ran high in both the Houses of Parliament, which saw acrimonious scenes today between the treasury and Shiromani Akali Dal-led opposition, with the latter accusing the government of misusing the CBI for shielding the 1984 anti-Sikh riots accused Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar.

The Akali MPs, supported by the BJP, Left, AIADMK and the BSP, slammed the government for the exoneration of Jagdish Tytler by a Delhi Court following a closure report by the CBI.

While the Rajya Sabha was adjourned at 12 noon after the opposition MPs (led by SAD’s Sukhdev Dhindsa and BJP’s SS Ahluwalia) trooped into the well of the House, protesting cosmetic action in the case, the Lok Sabha saw unprecedented and heated exchanges between SAD member from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal and UPA ministers Pranab Mukherjee and Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The latter termed the 1984 Sikh carnage as “the most shameful event in the Indian history post-Partition” and said the Prime Minister had already apologised for the same in the House, even promised to reopen cases against the accused, if needed.

An unusually ballistic Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bansal accused the opposition of “baking political cakes on the funeral pyres of dead Sikhs”, a comment that infuriated the Akali Dal, with Harsimrat saying the time for government assurances was over and concrete action was now demanded. Her speech carried enough ammunition to evoke angry reactions from Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee who said, “The PM has apologised. How many times should he do that?”

Earlier, after Speaker Meira Kumar disallowed her notice for the suspension of Question Hour, Harsimrat raised the issue in zero hour, recounting the horrors of 1984 riots.

In an emotionally charged reference to the dark days, she recounted the statements of top Indian leaders including former Prime Minister IK Gujral, who recorded “how the President of the time and Home Minister PV Narsimha Rao sat casually as Sikhs were singled out, killed and burnt alive in Delhi.”

“Will anyone in this House put his hand on the heart and say that a single person responsible for the Sikh massacre has been brought to justice in 25 years?” she asked, unable to make her point as the speech attracted sharp reactions from Congressmen. Even MPs from Punjab Pratap Singh Bajwa and Ravneet Bittu joined the UPA ranks in countering Harsimrat, who had to abandon much of her speech.

At last something from Akalis which is good for Sikhs & Sikhi in Punjab . I greatly appreciate the stand taken by Harsimrat Kaur Badal , Dhindsa & Tirlochan Singh . May more & more MPs join this tirade against blatant Congress shameless cover-ups because 1984 leads directly to Rajeev Gandhi who was the main string puller during the genocide . Shame on Punjab Congress MPs Ravneet Bittu is an uneducated dropout who never deserved to win elections won only due to sympathy wave in favour of Manmohan Singh .Shame on Partap Singh Bajwa NEVER FORGET 1984 .

What did the Akalies do to punish the culprits when they were in power at the center for 6 yrs., in co-coalition with the BJP and Vajpayee as the prime-minister.
Absolutely nothing.
They did not raise a single question about punishing the instigators of the 1984 massacre of the Sikhs.
They only remember the 84 riots when in the opposition.
Another thing that must be pointed out is that Congress party has members from all communities and religions.then how is it that all those accused of murdering Sikhs are Hindus.
Does"nt it show that there was more to it than just grief for Indra Gamdhi.:angrymunda:

This question was raised to H.S phulka in TV programme .and let me tell you what he said.HE said we are not too happy with the performence of NDA government But Still When NDA came to power All the cases were reopened
as 14 years were already past of riots and when Nanavati commsion which was established by them gave report power already was back in congress hands. After that cases were given to CBI which is now well known that it is used by congress against its opponents.

Also if you don't know tytler is sikh/christian as his only connection with hinduism was his father who died in 1947 riots. He took the name of christian Father Tytler

What is the possibility of another 1984 being staged...IF the Guilty are found "Guilty" and sent to prison ?? IF they could do it in 1984..whats to stop them next year or the next ? Has the "Leadership" that was in power in 1984..CHANGED ?? I dont think so..the very same people are still in power..and thus a repeat can very well happen...who will be responsible for any deaths and destruction then ?? Have adequate safeguards been put in place to PREVENT a REPEAT of 1984 ??...Those safeguards MUST be in Place..first.:}--}:

Re: Akalis disrupt Parliament over ’84 riots

India would need another freedom struggle to set right damage caused by denial of justice and perennial misdeeds. There is probably a need for Hind Sabha movement against the corrupt and demoralized political goons in India.

Be it innocent Sikh victims of 1984, innocent city dwellers of Bhopal in 1984, poor fishermen of coastal Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh or any of the thousands of victims justice is denied. The present system does not guarantee justice to common man, but only to elites. We (Most Indian Common Men) burn with wrath for a while on being denied justice, but at the time of voting we get taken away by cheap tactics, false promises more divisive sentiments (caste for example) and finally diminish our struggle for justice.

These are the type of propaganda we are made to believe

i) Sikh Rioters were killed by public in 1984.
ii) All Tamils captured, tortured and killed in Southern states in 1991 (following Rajiv's Assasination) were LTTE aides.
iii) All the Bengalis, Biharis killed by STF in recent months were Maoists.

and many more.

The magnitude of injustice done in 1984 to Sikhs is unknown to most other regions of India due to deliberate negligence of media. Similarly, hardly does anyone know about the anti-Tamil propaganda that followed Rajiv Gandhi's assasination. A number of ex-INA heroes were shot dead by Police in southern TN during their peaceful protest against some unjust policies against farmers fearing their popularity. There is a need for all of us to unite with sensitivity to each other's pains and fight in an organized manner vowing to keep the culprits and criminals out of power.

There are Muslims and Christians who figure in the long list of rioters. One can look into the case of "Kohli Electronics" in Rajouri Gardens for example. Goons were paid by their political masters to massacre Sikhs. Ofcourse, a majority of the Goons were Hindus as Hindus form the major population of India. It does not mean that Hindu Community turned against Sikhs. Eminent Sikh Khushwant Singh writer himself gives credit to the local Hindus for concealing Sikhs and supporting the victims. Can the Islamic Community itself be branded as "Terrorists" for acts of Taliban and Al-Qaeda? Can the Christian community itself (including me) be branded as terrorists and fanatics for the acts of 'Klu Klux Klan"? Can All Sikhs be branded terrorists for Kanishka Bombing, killing non Sikhs in trains, buses, markets? I don't mean to justify the inhuman and satanic massacre but just trying to avoid generalization of Hindu community of over a billion for the acts done by a few politically sponsored goons.
Terror is terror irrespective of religion.
Sonali Bose, producer of the film "Amu" highlighting the injustice of 1984 and demanding the justice is also a Hindu.
Majority of Hindus respecct Sikh Gurus as their prophets.

When BJP raises the question of 84 riots, Congress raises 2002 Gujarat riots and vice- versa. To put it crudely they are all "ullu ka pathas"who are only interested in politicizing to get some cheap votes.

The political career of Culprits of 84 riots and 2002 were quite hit by the bad publicity they got from riots. Both Tytler and sajjan were emerging chief minister candidates of delhi but they were unable to become because of 84 riots.Similarly modi may be a hero in Gujarat but outside He is Still not acceptable to many allies of BJP.We all know that there is no chance of justice in any of case.Hoping for it is like day dreaming

I never wrote anywhere that the whole Hindu community was against the Sikhs, but it is a common perception that the mobs consisted of Hindus only.

Re: Akalis disrupt Parliament over ’84 riots

I never wrote anywhere that the whole Hindu community was against the Sikhs, but it is a common perception that the mobs consisted of Hindus only.

There are multiple chargesheets filed with long lists that consist of other communities as well. Kohli Electronics case for example was filed by a Sikh Officer of Delhi Police. Ofcourse being the majority community, there would be a majority of Hindu names. Again, this was a sponsored pogrom and not just a violent reaction of people.

To add Oscar Fernandez, another big name in the list of 1984 sponsorers hails from my region.

There is no guarantee that this will not repeat as long as we (the common men) remain divided over our rights for justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. Our ethnic divide is what the ruling party (and also the opposition party) wants so that we continue to remain slaves and pawns hating and fighting each other undetermined to challenge the political immorality from the days of British rule till date. Even today, the perception at southern, western and eastern states is that "Sikh Rioters went on Rampage" which is not true. We are denied justice at large.

Let us vote for people on the basis of merit, honesty and dedication like Gen JJ Singh (The present Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, http://arunachalgovernor.gov.in/html/profile_HE_Governor_ARP.pdf) if we have to seek for socio-political justice and progress.

Gyani ji

The repetetion of another 84 in present circumstance is nearly impossible.
Let me explain it to you point by point

1)There is hostile environment towards sikhs no longer exists in General public.
For any Riots hostile environment is necessary

2)Leadership has changed. The sajjan kumar and tytler no longer enjoy the
powerful position in their parties because of 84.Sonia Gandhi and Rahul have the main power. Also Delhi is under control of sheila Dixit who is considered as
good politician and mainly responsible for development of Delhi

3) Presence of Electronic Media.Today many people have camera's.Any video of a politican organising a riot and his career is gone.

4)The political environment of India has changed No party in India from past 14 years has the majority all are dependent on allies even 1% shift in votebank could result in setback for a party

As far safeguards are concerned For urban sikhs totally forget about it.They are the most soft target .They have only interest in 1 thing and that is money

I was refering to the mob. There were niether Muslims nor CHristians but only Hindus who were massacering the Sikhs.

The mobs were Hindu because of simple reason.Hindu's hate muslims.a muslim mob could have turned majority Hindus against the rioters and may be sikh could had got sympathy from Hindu's.In 1984 there was large population of Punjabi Hindu's in Delhi which had seen the horror of partitions.Muslim mobs could have reminded them that horrors.

The second thing is to organise muslim mob you need help of muslim leaders
who were very well aware that congress could had double cross them by allowing police to open fire on muslim mobs
