AMRITSAR: American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC) today made an appeal to the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, Akal Takht to develop consensus on the Nanakshahi Calendar (Separate Sikh calendar) to end certain confusions regarding its implementations throughout Sikh circles. They said the in past years certain amendments were made in original 2003 Nanakshahi Calendar but there had been a total lack of consensus on the changes.

In a release issued from Freemont, California (USA), AGPC President S.JS Hothi and Coordinator Dr. Pritpal Singh said Akal Takht Sahib must take initiatives to hold dialogues with all the Sikh institutions and organizations.

``Even all the five Sikh Takhts are not having total agreement on the amendments made in the original calendar and we need to strike the consensus amongst all these Takhts’’, said Dr. Pritpal Singh. He said there are many Sikh institutions including the AGPC which have reservations on the changes made in the Calendar and its implementations.

The US leaders said that they would like that dialogues are held throughout the panthic circles as 5 Sikh takht do not agree on the issue and have aired their differences on the important issue of calendar in the past and have not agreed fully to the amendments made. This religious issue needed to be taken up at the priority basis throughout and Akal Takht must act to end the ambiguities regarding the implementation of the Nanakshahi calendar in its original form.

They said that the Calendar was originally approved by the Sri Akal Takht Sahib in 2003 when Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti was the Jathedar of Akal Takht but later various amendments were made without taking the whole Sikh Sangat into confidence. ``The new amendments have deformed the original calendar. We respect the Akal Takht and would appeal the supreme temporal seat once again to intervene and seek the consensus of the whole Sikh community on the issue’’, said the US leader.

Not really. The American Board has released several appeals revolving around the calednar since the 2010 announcement by Akal Takht. They are quite vocal in most world-wide controversies. The threads about the board slip from view in the forum over time.
