Agency hopes to cash in on adults' taste for breast milk

Young mothers are being hired by agencies to breastfeed rich adults in the south China city of Shenzhen, earning from 8,000 yuan (US$1,303) to 15,000 yuan a month for the service.

Customers at present range from the parents of babies who have lost faith in Chinese baby formula to adults who believe breast milk would boost their health, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Lin Jun, a Henan Province native, told the newspaper he was aiming to develop the breastfeeding business among China's rich adults.

His job is to find young mothers for his customers, charging the customer 6,000 yuan and the mothers 2,000 yuan.

The mother and customer then work out a fee between themselves. Lin said some mothers could earn up to 120,000 yuan over an eight-month period.

"Breast milk is the best tonic, especially for those people who have just undergone major surgeries," said Lin. "If it is necessary, the customers may directly feed from the young mothers' breasts," he added.

Lin said many of the young mothers he hired were from rural areas and very likely living in poverty.

He said the mothers would seldom object to customer requirements as long as they paid enough money.

He Mei, the 25-year-old mother of a two-month-old son, said she had decided to provide a breastfeeding service to earn money for her son's future education.

She said her husband worked for a factory in Shenzhen and earned just 2,000 yuan a month, which was not enough to support the family.

She leaves the baby in the care of her mother-in-law to work for the agency earning 8,500 yuan a month.

Lin told the newspaper that he was planning to travel around the country, hiring more mothers for his service via local agencies.

According to the resumes he had seen, all were from poor families and with children just a few months old.

Lin said he would be interviewing the women and checking their health before giving them jobs.

Once hired, the mothers don't have to do anything but feed and take care of customers though their labor contract would describe them as babysitters, cooks or cleaners and make no mention of breastfeeding, he told the newspaper.

Each mother would work for a six to eight-month period, Lin said.

His customers, both worried parents and adults who felt in need of a health boost, would also interview the mothers.

Customers cared most about the mothers' health status and then their character, Lin said. But it was the mother who could afford to be choosy as at present there were not many offering such services, he said.

However, Zhang Maoxiang, director of the nutrition department of the Shenzhen No.2 People's Hospital, warned of health risks if feeding mothers became ill.

Some questions:

1. What is the modus operandi to make this into a huge breast milk market when the law is one child per person?

2.Would the new borns be killed and discarded, which is not hard to do in China just for the milk?

3. We all know the tainted baby formula scandal in baby formula in China. Would this help the Chinese companies to become honest?

4. If this business picks up, would India follow suit?

5. How would it help Indian poor women who can also breed and dispose the new borns if they join the crowd?

6. What are its ramifications morally speaking in any culture?

This is a serious issue and as Harry ji's said, this may become a spring board to sell milk from the animals as women's breast milk. Female dogs are eaten in some countries.

7. What are your opinions about it?

Let's start this conversation.

I posted the article for the following reasons. I wrote the questions but they got erased somehow before getting posted:

Rather than reply to your questions, may I use them as guides to considering economic and moral issues?

I did some background research. There is a veritable league of advocates for breast milk, most of the advocacy claiming that breast milk has 'amazing' medicinal properties. There is no scientific basis for the claims. It is all at this point part of the popular culture.

Let's keep focused on the topic of breast milk for adults only. It is claimed that breast milk is an effective cure for leg ulcers, and a host of other ailments, including post-surgical recovery. What is the scientific evidence for this? Not one but two moral issues rise up, without any real scientific information as back-up.

1. A cost/benefit question: Even if breast milk is an effective cure, it might be a more expensive cure than another more obvious treatment. Hence, breast milk vendors take people to the cleaners, and the advocates and enthusiasts are helping them do it, in spite of a cheaper and equally effective solution.

2. Ignoring real causes of disease: Even if breast milk clears up leg ulcers, leg ulcers are symptoms of serious and even life-threatening diseases. Diabetes and lymphodema are both complicated by leg ulcers. A person applying breast milk to ulcers and seeing results can end up thinking a cure has taken place --- and diabetes is actually lurking undetected. Which in turn can lead to blindness, heart disease, and many other serious problems. including death.

I could not find any recognizably medical research on medicinal uses of breast milk which makes me think that it will definitely take off in popular culture because of its novelty. We have a winner with breast milk.

Lactating women might want to sell their own breast milk, independently cutting out the middle man. Questions of sanitation and hygiene might crop up, as did with the plain old dairy farms of days gone by. Governments may bring breast milk under the control of food and drug monitoring. Because breast milk is a food, not a drug, close monitoring may not be required. An entire food lobby, the breast milk lobby, can emerge, if it has not already. Using political clout to prevent regulation - as we are very aware with the food supplement industry they could be very effective, (duping important political figures like Senator Orin Hatch who was a powerful sponsor of the wildflower Mormon tea, aka Ephedra, a powerful neurotransmitter which can kill a person.)

So we have a busy future ahead with breast milk. Who would have thought it more than the best way to nourish a baby? Ahead: unionization of lactating women, lots of browser hijaking web pages that will sell subscriptions on auto pay after you listen to an endless video lecture, YouTube channels, congressional hearings, FDA or its equivalent in other countries ruling on packaging and distribution, price wars and price fixing, bogey claims and popular truths. Someone will be making big money; it won't be the lactating moms. Someone will be paying out money better spent in a different way; it won't be spent on scientifically sound products.

Oh yes! and rat milk, dog milk, horse milk, mink milk passed off as breast milk. Maybe even bribes and pay-offs of officials on that score. Which means lots of scandal, and that is good for paying sponsors of the nightly news.
