NEW DELHI: Former councillor Balwan Khokkar, accused in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, on Wednesday told a trial court that former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar, a co-accused in the case, did not instigate any mob to kill the Sikhs. Deposing before Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta, Khokkar said, "It is incorrect to say that Sajjan Kumar had come in a police vehicle in the area and was addressing the mob."

Khokkar, facing trial with Kumar and four others regarding killing of six persons in Delhi Cantonment area, also refused a suggestion that Kumar was provoking the mob to kill all the Sikhs. "It is wrong and incorrect to say that Sajjan Kumar was provoking the mob, saying that no sardar (Sikh) should be left alive and that all their remaining houses should be burnt down," Khokkar said. He denied that Kumar ever provoked the mob to "kill all Sikhs as they have killed my (Sajjan) mother ( Indira Gandhi)".

He further said that during the riots, he had given shelter to six Sikh families and provided them with food and had also gone to the Air Force gurdwara to see them. Khokkar also denied that he along with other accused Mahender Yadav took Nirpreet Kaur's father on a scooter and later burnt him to death after taking a match box from a policeman.

Khokkar's statement remained inconclusive and court decided to record the remaining statement on Thursday. Besides Kumar and Khokkar, other accused in the case are Krishan Khokkar, Mahender Yadav, Captain Bhagmal and Girdhari Lal. Three eye witnesses - Nirpreet Kaur, Joginder Singh and Jagdish Kaur - in the case had deposed against Khokkar in the court.

The case against Sajjan Kumar, former Outer Delhi MP, has been registered on a recommendation by the G T Nanavati Commission. The CBI had filed two charge sheets against him and others in January last year.
