LUDHIANA: Irked at the failure of the administration regarding issuance of red cards for victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots, many of the affected people met additional deputy commissioner SR Klair on Monday and submitted a memorandum.

They said the last date for the cards' issuance was August 31, but till now, nothing had been done in that connection.

President of Danga Peedit Welfare Society, Surjit Singh, alleged that the government had a dilly-dallying attitude regarding the situation. He mentioned that 300 cards were still to be given away, even as last date was almost here. "It is only after the cards are given that the financial assistance would arrive for most," he added.

He stated that Union home ministry had already sent a letter to the state government, but district administration had done nothing even after that.

The association's vice-president, Amarjeet Singh, said the date for issuing cards had been extended twice already and this callousness on part of officials was adding to the suffering of victims.

He mentioned that some of the compensatory cheques had been forwarded by the government, but administration had failed to release the pending dues.

The society's vice-president added in the memorandum that victims had appealed to the government to extend the date so that administration got time to finish the process of issuing the red cards.

He added that the original date for issuing red cards was March 31 and then it was extended to the August 31, but the administration had not provided the the cards till now.
