I would agree with this above passage that study of religion is indeed on the incline in University campuses. Not only classes but discussions, forums, seminars and debates are increasingly tackling the subject of religion. However there is no mention of what kind of students are taking up these courses or attending this events. My philosophy of religion class is overwhelmingly atheist. Even the Sikh History class I dropped in on earlier in the year was a pretty even mishmash of non-religious and religious students. Just because there is a rise of religious studies on campus doesnt mean that religion itself is "on the rise" in university campuses. Most of the interest in religion (and this is my opinion, i have no stats to back this up) comes from the overwhelming liberal, atheist, sciency type students. I will say though that prior to University. I thought I would be the "least" atheistic person on campus. That the entire university, from the students to the profs, would be staunch atheists. I couldnt have been more rong—atleast with regards to minority religions. I think alot of minority students, especially muslims and jews in my opinion and to a lesser extent sikhs, came to university and became more religious then they were in highschool. So university do foster a strong religious community. And for what its worth, I think the universities do a fine job discussing religion and holding such events. Then again, I go to a Canadian university. And fundamental christianity like evangelicism is practically unheard of outside of Alberta lol
