I think Kanwardeep Singh ji has a point because this happened in a part of the US where fundamentalists, yokels and extreme conservatives abound. Sometimes the citizens are fundamentalists, yokels and extreme conservatives all at the same time, and often they are the police force in a town. This happened in West Texas - it explains a lot. If you are from UK, or Europe, you may not see what I see in this story. West Texas is one big desert/prairie hit by violent and destructive tornados for half the year. It is still a rural setting where people are isolated and like it that way. The people there are proud of their conservative life style. Whatever that is supposed to mean! There is no federalization of police in the US. It is completely a local operation. State police and FBI have a different mandate. So the fact that the attackers were charged with a misdemeanor only is a scandal but it does not surprise me. In small town USA and in some big cities in Texas, Arizona, etc some people act like they are still riding horses and out looking for cattle rustlers to rope up from a tree. Wrong turns are made all the time. And the fact is that some are still riding horses and looking for "varmits." No exaggeration. It is the home of Christian Identity movements and enclaves. I would not myself travel in West Texas alone without companions and a good V6 engine, a tank full of gas, and a gun under the car seat. Apologies from my country. We are not all that way.
