Union Home Ministry warns Punjab government over Bluestar Memorial PunjabNewsline - Friday, June 8, 2012 - 19:30 By Sukhpal Kaur CHANDIGARH: Taking serious note of the setting up of the Operation Bluestar Memorial at the Golden Temple, the Union Home Ministry has warned the Akali-BJP government against going too lax with the radical elements. The Home Ministry has asked Punjab government to take strong action against the radical elements like Damdami Taksal and Dal Khalsa who are trying to stoke sectarian and separatist sentiments. The ministry has expressed concern over the fact that Damdami Taksal and Dal Khalsa are holding martyr meetings across Punjab – visiting houses of those killed in Operation Bluestar. Earlier, Dal Khalsa had released a directory of 220 people who died during the Operation in June 1984. A ministry official was quoted saying, since law and order was a state subject, it was left to the Punjab Government to take action besides being warned of the consequences if it turns a blind eye to the ongoing developments. The Union Home Ministry sternly said radical elements were trying to arouse passions of Sikh community across the state, which may again bring people together for the cause of Khalistan in the coming times. The warning has been issued following reports from Intelligence Bureau (IB) that radical elements were trying to revive the separatist movement with support from Khalistani terrorists hiding in Pakistan. During 1984, Operation Bluestar was launched to flush out terrorists headed by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala, head of Damdami Taksal, who had taken control of the Golden Temple Complex. The IB is also alarmed by Sikh clergy bestowing the title of ‘Zinda Shaheed’ (living martyr) on Beant Singh assassin Balwant Singh Rajoana who is facing death sentence. An official of the Home Ministry said the government feels Punjab is giving implicit support to Damadami Taksal and Dal Khalsa by not taking any stringent action against them, adding that the government does not intend to offend SGPC and Akal Takht priests. Meanwhile, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, on Wednesday, said the Punjab Government had nothing to do with the memorial, the construction of which had been initiated by SGPC and Damdami Taksal. On June 6 foundation stone of the memorial was laid by five Sikh head priests after the ceremony of Akhand Path commemorating Bluestar anniversary. Balwant Singh Rajoana’s foster sister Kamalpreet Kaur had received the title of Zinda Shaheed on his behalf.
