Re: Travel to Millbourne, Pa., the only town in America with a majority Indian popula DrK!!! I hope you get your post doc in Philly too!!! Wouldn't it be wonderful! About not seeing any turbaned Sikhs when you were in Philadelphia. It seems to me, too, that there were not many Sikhs until much recently. But long ago, when I was in graduate school at Temple University in Philadelphia, there were many Sikhs also in graduate school. The Upper Darby area is well populated with Sikhs today -- the town right next to Milbourne. But this is recent -- in less than the past 10 years. My first discovery of this was waiting for a taxi cab at a transportation center only a few blocks from the Milbourne Station of the elevated train into Philadelphia. The first cab up was being driven by "Amolak" in a pink turban. A young man who couldn't speak any English. Later, on my trip back from the hospital where I was going I was picked up by his brother "Mr. Singh" I don't know his first name. And out of respect I wouldn't use his first name anyway. So that was when I was a newbie to Sikhi and became very excited. Then I found out about the gurdwara in Upper Darby. In MIlbourne - The Philadelphia Sikh Society is the gurdwara . It may be that not everyone in Milbourne wears a turban. There must have been a wave of immigration to Philadelphia by Sikhs in the past ten years. Now there are many north of Philadelphia in various suburban areas, and also several large gurdwaras. In my mother's town - 50 minutes away from me, there is a large Sikh community. And you see turbans, a lot of turbans. This is truly a new development. Unlike the people in Milbourne, this community is more well-to-do. But I am not sure why. Thanks again.
