I am afraid it is hard to take, at face value, all the details given in the write up on Akal Takhat by by Dilgeer Ji. There are many things which just do not match up. We are aware that the Sixth Guru embraced the concept of Miri Piri. He wore two swords and refused to accept authority of the mortals. He wore a plume (Kalghi) like a king. He built the throne of Akal, the Eternal. One of the words the article uses is "priests". No, there was never a concept of lineage of priests in Sikh faith. IT is an expression that has been used by the English media and calling the Jathedars of the five Takhats as high priests. One of the fundamentals of Sikh faith is rejection of priesthood. Guru Nanak points out wrongdoings of the priests in his Shabad 'Kaaiaa kaagad man parvaana' on SGGS page 662. The recent The title Jathedar is not something of recent origin. Akali Phoola Singh was one. He also called Maharaja Ranjit Singh and gave punishment for his transgression, which the latter accepted. He as Jathedar led the Sikhs into battle. The article mentions Akali Bunga. No, this refers to personal residence of some Akalis. The Akal Takhat was earlier known as Akal Bunga or Takhat. The article mentions both Akali Bunga and Akal Bunga. Our Ardas includes supplication for preservation of Bungey - Chaukeeaa jhanddey bungey jugo jugo attal'. This cannot be for personal residences. Yes, there were numerous Bungas built by many leaders of Misls and some of them still exist around the Golden Temple complex. This seems to cause the confusion. Physical Takhat has no spiritual value. The Takhats are places of temporal authority. I read but cannot recall the reference that the five Takhats have regional responsibilities namely three in Majha, Doaba and Malwa regions of Punjab, and one each in East and South India. I am conscious of the fact that Takhat Damdama Sahib is a recent addition. But its importance was always there for the tenth Guru Sahib stayed there and the final version of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was completed. The present practices of the Akal Takhat along with those of the others is an aberration caused by self-serving politicians. This article creates more doubts than it clarifies anything.
