All your points have merit. The problem is though, IF we have to make all the variables (like the ones you pointed out) exactly the same—then we are losing the generalizability of any effect we see. We dont want to find an effect that is only present amongst a certain triplet of mice (all of whom were Buddhist)at a certain atmospheric pressure under a certain light bulb and handled by triplet researchers (all of whom were Buddhist as well) who all wore the same cotton sweater from the same cloned lab sheep ( :P as you can see, if we were to control variables to that degree—the effect becomes ridiculous). We want to find effects that are able to generalize between different kinds of mice in different areas. But may also generalize upwards to humans (that is why we do experiments on mice after all, they are tiny little substitute humans :P). So we cannot design experiments that take into consideration every one of potentially infinite variables. At some point we have to declare some variables as having a negligible effect. The problem is that sometimes, random chance events can and do influence the outcome of an experiment. On a larger scale. If 10 different researchers are doing an experiment on meditation and none of the researchers know that the other is doing a similar experiment. 1 of them is bound to find a statistically significt result simply by chance. The other 9 may not find any positive results; therefore, they may decide not to publish their null results. But the 1 person who found positive results by chance gets published (because positive results are like 90 percent more likely to get published) and he forever skews the direction of research in his field until someone notices that his effect isnt replicable or generizable. Its a tricky situation then. BTW Sat Sri Akal is fine. I have no qualms with it :P.
