My step-daughter was invited to Bible study by one of her friends last year... she's had a rough couple of years with her mother's side of the family (crime, etc) and I think having people reach out and pray for her and tell her she's loved by God won her over almost instantly - and that's the biggest problem I think. If people aren't getting love and support at home or from their community they can be influenced by it swiftly and heavily. A colleague from work is a member of a choir of a very Evangelical group in my city, they own the biggest church here, and they had an Easter show on which I took my step-daughter to see (her parents are both atheists). They build Jesus up in the story of Easter, and then kill him (obviously) and it really gets to the humanity in anyone I think. For Christians it's obviously very affirming. After the show the pastor gives a big emotional prayer and speech, getting people to raise their hands and pray and follow that feeling which the story has created in them. It's a bit like showing someone a cooking program then handing them a burger hehehe. The thing that got to me the most, was at the end of the performance, when the pastor was leading the group in prayer for Jesus blessings and faith etc, I heard the family behind me praying - they were Indian! and that made me feel kind of sad. It's a bit tricky for Sikhi in that, despite it's amazing beauty and Truth, it's not a candy bar of warm fuzzies and love and cuddles... You don't get a pat on the back and told everything will be alright, just praise the Lord and believe in Jesus as your savior and all will be roses. Sikhi requires self responsibility, effort and a deep search for Truth and I think that might be the community's jugular vein for these Evangelicals. But I'm a relative outsider and could very well be wrong. Oh, did you know there's a book on converting Sikhs? http://www.singhsabhacanada.com/?p=394 Awe, it's out of print, what a shame...
