[QUOTE="spnadmin, post: 137779, member: 35"] Gagandeep Ahuja Monday, 29 November 2010 PATIALA: Dr. Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University while opening the proceedings of the Two day National Seminar on "Role of Teachers in Promoting Communal Harmony and National Integration" here today said that "if religion is welfare and politics is social service then both should be intermingled". He further argued that martyrdom of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur was against the fanatics of politics at that time. He opined that Gurus emphasized on liberal, democratic and pluralistic state. The seminar is being organised by Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur National Integration Chair and Department of Education and Community Services at the University campus and is sponsored by New Delhi based National Foundation for Communal Harmony. Eminent Sikh Scholar and Former Pro Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University Dr. Prithipal Singh Kapoor in his keynote address highlighted the importance of martyrdom in Sikhism. He further emphasized on ninth guru as prophet of assurance elaborating upon his contribution to Sikhism. Dr. Jaspal Kaur Kaang, Chairperson of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Punjab University Chandigarh in her special address on the life and philosophy of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur said that the verses of Gurus give message of realities and values in human life that we have left behind in today's materialistic world. She discussed about teachings of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur stressing that time has come to inculcate his teachings in our life. Tarlochan Singh, former Chairperson, National Commission for Minorities said that everybody wants numerical strength by putting others in their own religion. This conversion is hindrance to communal harmony & national integration. Dr. Manjit Singh Registrar of the university proposed a vote of thanks. Chair Professor, Dr. Baltej Singh Mann and Head of Education Department Dr. Meenakshi also spoke on the occasion. In the first technical session chaired by Dr. Kehar Singh focused on threats to communal harmony and national integration As many as 6 papers were presented related to the theme. Among others who participated in the discussion included Prof. N.S. Johl, Dean, Faculty of Education, Prof. Meenakshi, Dr. Ramesh Madaan, S.D.
