The lawsuit was filed in partnership with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Foundation of Southern California [ <a href="http://www.aclu-sc.org/" target="_blank">http://www.aclu-sc.org/</a> ], the ACLU's Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief [ <a href="http://www.aclu.org/religion-belief/aclu-and-freedom-religion-and-belief" target="_blank">http://www.aclu.org/religion-belief/aclu-and-freedom-religion-and-belief</a> ], and the law firm Alston & Bird LLP [ <a href="http://www.alston.com/" target="_blank">http://www.alston.com/</a> ]. </p><p></p><p>The ultimate aim of this litigation is to ensure that Sikh detainees -- and indeed all others who are required to maintain beards for religious reasons -- are able to do so without penalty. </p><p></p><p>This is the second Sikh Coalition lawsuit against the CDCR [ <a href="http://newsinsacramento.com/2011/02/05/sikh-coalition-asks-attorney-general-to-end-discrimination.html" target="_blank">http://newsinsacramento.com/2011/02/05/sikh-coalition-asks-attorney-general-to-end-discrimination.html</a> ]. In December 2009, the Coalition filed a lawsuit against California's prison system for failing to hire a Sikh correctional officer job applicant who refused to cut his beard. That lawsuit remains open and is actively being litigated. </p><p></p><p>*Coalition Helps Bring Additional Partners to the Fight </p><p></p><p>*In addition to enlisting the help of the ACLU and Alston & Bird, the Sikh Coalition was able to persuade the U.S. Department of Justice [ <a href="http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2011/March/11-crt-334.html" target="_blank">http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2011/March/11-crt-334.html</a> ] to also file a separate lawsuit in order to protect Mr. Basra's religious rights under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA).
