Great article! As a general observation, over time we have seen examples of Religion and Science complementing each other For example, there are many leading theoretical physicists who believe in God. In fact, their intimate knowledge of the detailed workings of the Universe has actually enhanced their appreciation of God Another example is that not long ago, the Vatican decreed that the Big Bang theory was entirely compatible with the Christian faith. Changed days indeed since Copernicus and Gallileo!! People often entrench themselves in a must be one or other camp. Personally, I think you need to have some appreciation of both before you can make those sort of decisions. From the limited knowledge I have acquired to date, I tend to think they are both not mutually exclusive...after all, there are ultimately describing the same thing in different ways Re the article itself, I liked the "orientation" theory and categorisation and think this makes sense. In fact, I can think of people I know who fall into these categories! And I also understand where he is coming from with the moral code concept But I thought this was also a very good point: So a question then would be what is the source of morality? What came first? Was it the sense of right or wrong or was it religion? I'm inclined to think people had a sense of what was good and what was bad and then religion provided a framework that let them easily pin those concepts down and develop them further... For example, having established what is good and what is bad, there was a need to explain why things happened like the passage of the sun or why it only rained sometimes etc. This lead to polytheistic religions with various deities responsible for specific aspects of life and would have been the Science of the time. In fact religion was Science for a very long time...especially the Christian Church But I guess there was still something missing. All these deities living like humans and quarrelling and fighting etc still didn't make sense. Still didn't answer the fundamental questions of why we are here in the first place and is there a purpose to life etc. We then have a succession of great religious figures who have attempted to provide the answers ... It's late and I'm rambling again!! Good night folks!
