Punjab to enact law to rein in NRI bridegrooms Wednesday, 30 May 2012 22:59 PNS | JALANDHAR With rising cases of NRI grooms deserting their wives soon after wedding, Punjab Government has decided to implement a strict law to check frauds being committed by such grooms. After inaugurating a helpline “Crime Against Women” for women in distress, Punjab Deputy Chief Minster Sukhbir Singh Badal said that the State would not tolerate anybody committing fraud with the girls and was fully committed to check such malpractices. He said that the new law would stipulate complete verification of NRIs seeking to marry a Punjabi girl. A compulsory registration of such marriages would be done, besides shifting of details from the Indian consulate in that country from where NRI has come. Badal said that it was very painful to note that Doaba region has witnessed most of such fraud marriages by NRIs and the deserted wives had to run from pillar to post to seek justice. He said that he has given orders to conduct census of such deserted wives and districts have been told to work out funds required to provide legal assistance to them. He said that after working out the details, he would consolidate the list of victims, provide them total legal support, contact Indian consulate through External Affairs Ministry to track the guilty groom and bring him to justice. Describing it as burning issue of the day, the Deputy CM said that he would not allow any NRI to conduct a fraud of holiday marriage with innocent Punjabi girls and such people would be tracked down by every possible legal method and brought to justice. Expressing concern over the incidents of domestic violence with the women, he said that this new helpline would be monitored by Inspector General of Police and women would be given justice in a time-bound manner. Announcing direct recruitment of 2,000 women Police Inspectors and DSPs, Badal said that they would be in-charge of women Police Stations in all the districts. He said that the new recruitments would be made within six months. Asking the NRI department to come out with blue print, he said that we should also come out with the tracking system to track offender NRIs. Calling for the social pressure on the families of offending NRIs who have deserted their wives in Punjab, MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal said that names and photographs of offending families should be put on a website so that such families mend their ways under social pressure.
