Sri Dasam Granth Sahib: Questions and Answers
By Gurinder Singh Mann and Kamalroop Singh
ISBN: 978-0956843500, Pages: 120, Images: 20 , Price: £8.99

  • A new book on the Sri Dasam Granth Sahib reveals not only more about the history and compilation of this Sikh scripture but also shows rare images of the earliest manuscripts of the Granth.
  • The Q and A book reveals the purpose and reasoning behind why Guru Gobind Singh created a complimentary scripture to the Guru Granth Sahib.
  • The book was presented to the Jathedars of the Five Takhts in the UK, on 18th May 2011.
The warrior-poet of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, who was adept in several Indic languages, would put his linguistic skills to good use in his writings: the Dasam Patshah Ka Granth. The term Dasam Granth would become well-known in the late 19th century. The book tells the story of this Sikh scripture, from the Court of the Guru through to how the Granth is still revered to this day. Certain elements from within the religion, have faced difficulties in understanding the context of when and for what purpose the Granth was written. As a result confusion and misunderstandings have crept in without any redress from Sikh scholars.

Two Sikh scholars, Gurinder Singh Mann and Kamalroop Singh, both from the UK have spent many years searching for the historical basis of the Granth, the earliest manuscripts, and the praxis of the Tenth Guru’s Granth. Gurinder started researching Sikhism and particularly this scripture as early as 1997 as part of his MA, and his essays and presentations have been quoted and are widely recognised as some of the best work in the field of Dasam Granth studies. Kamalroop’s revolutionary Phd has given the first account complete account of how Dasam Granth was formed. He has discovered unknown manuscripts together with important secondary sources about the Dasam Granth as well giving lectures around the world.
Their combined expertise in the field of Dasam Granth studies is shown in the Q and A book. They answer 50 common questions that have been repeatedly asked about Guru Gobind Singh’s Granth. These include the following:

-When was Dasam Granth written?
-What is the link between Gatka/Shastarvidyia and the Dasam Granth?
-Are there any handwritten pages by Guru Gobind Singh?
-Does any 18th century source claim there was any controversy over the Dasam Granth?

The two scholars have listed and examined some of the earliest manuscripts of the Dasam and revealed some unknown manuscripts for the first time. Of particular interest to readers should be the discussion of the first manuscript of the Dasam Granth known as the Anandpuri Bir (1695/1696). The back cover of the book has a painting of the Tenth Guru. This painting is taken from the Anandpuri Bir and is a rare authentic depiction of Guru Gobind Singh in courtly regalia. Other rare manuscripts include: the Patna Sahib, Bhai Mani Singh, Baba Deep Singh, Bhai Daya Singh and the Akal Takht manuscripts.

The book also sheds more light on the link between Bhai Shia Singh, Bhai Mani Singh and Mata Sundri, and the compilation of Bhai Mani Singh’s recension of the Dasam Granth. The issue of the ceremonial reading of both the Guru Granth Sahib and Dasam Granth is assessed by citing historical instances of this practice. Furthermore, the authors, after considering many sources of Sikh history which prove the importance of Guru Granth Sahib, show that they are in fact the same ones that confirm the significance of the Dasam Granth. This highlights the contradictions, lack of scholarly skills, and even distortions which have been created to diminish the importance of the Tenth Guru’s Granth.

This book is an invaluable guide to gaining a thorough understanding of the Sikh scripture in an easy and interesting way.

Let me point out that there is no "Sri" inthe Dasam Granth. The only Sri is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Giving a title of "Sri" is a sure clue that the author is part and parcel of an initiative to place Dasam Granth on parkash with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This is not new, but it is becoming a trend, and connected with the political agenda of RSS and Sant Samaj to dilute the distinct identity of Sikhism.

Demote, contradict the Guru, There is no longer a One and Only, Undermine the Khalsa.

The very subtitle "Questions and Answers" presumes religious authority on the part of the authors. Like a Roman Catechism where the confused and the uneducated ask questions and receive answers from a circle of clergy and scholars authorized to answer. There is more than one problem with that if a book is supposed to be a work of scholarship instead of a catechism.

At best the Dasam Granth is an anthology of historically interesting poetry. At worst it the result of a conspiracy to hand over to the empire an authentic Sikh Scripture. Prior to 1902 the words "Dasam Granth" were never used to title a "Sikh Scripture."

How the title changed
The granth was given different names at different times in the following order:

1. Bachittar Natak
2. Daswen Patshah ka Granth
3. Dasam Granth
4. Sri Dasam Granth
5. Sri Dasam Granth Sahib
6. Sri Dasam Guru Granth Sahib

Beware. Of the five jathedars who have given their seal, one is a political appointee. Two must pass political review of the Badal Akaali party. And 2 of them are frequently in a row with the other 3. This issue is an exception. Now they are in agreement. One of them is a bigamist.

In academia, this sort of book is considered bought and paid for.

GNDU is also working very hard to promote the Parallle line of so called Gurus from PRITHI CHAND...Meharban and Harji..who wrote banis in the exact same fashion, raags etc under Mahalla 6, Mahalla 7, and Mahalla 8 to Challenge the Legitimate Sikh GURUS Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Guur Har rai Sahib Ji and Guru harkishan Sahib Ji. ( This is one reason why the Sikh Gurus didnt write any Gurbani under Maahallas 6/7/8 in order to not confuse the sangat...and on hindsight that looks like a very good happening because as it happeend the Kartarpuri Bir of Guru Arjun Ji had come into the Posession of the Prithi Chand family and the Fake Bani under Mahallas 6/7/8 would have really caused massive confuison .....even though the MINA Gurus had a Ninth Guru and a Tenth Guru and so on....there was no more bani ?? while Guru Teg bahdaur Ji did write Gurbani under Mahalla 9 !!)
A new work.."Sikhan da chhota mel" undertaken by GNDU scholars Joginder Ahluwaliah is publishing all this in a massive 10 volume work - First Vol is OUT and it lsits all the bani that Prithi Chand wrote under 18 raags in the exact same style and fashion of Gurbani of the Sikh Gurus.
This scenario allows the rasing of Baba SRICHAND as a "Guru" as wella s Bhai lehna Ji as Guur at Khadoor...because Prithi Chand had a parralle line of Gurus after Guru Arjun !!
OR that there was actually no legitimate Guru after Guru nanak ji at all....
Thus the multi-prong attack on Sikhism and its Guru continues unabated and the historical waters continue to be muddied and churned while the dsm granth controversy churns the gurbani waters to muddy them...and Universities that are set up to promote the GURU GRANTH are instead acting as Trojan Horses to sabotage the very thing they are set up to propogate.( Late Dr Pritam Singh who accumalated most of the Prithi Chand banis is the father of Dr harsharan kaur who has been in the news lately as defender of Punjabi language, punjabi girl child etc etc)
