One of North America's largest Sikh gurdwaras - the Ontario Khalsa Darbar, located on the NW corner of Dixie and Derry Roads in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada - opened the doors of its new Multimedia Sikh Museum to the public last Sunday (October 10, 2010). This hi-tech project is spearheaded by Surrey, British Columbia-based encyclopaedist, museologist, drug therapist and community activist Dr. Raghbir Singh Bains. The museum provides opportunities for visitors to learn about Sikhism, the fifth largest religion of the world. A recipient of Order of British Columbia and many other international awards, Dr. Raghbir Singh produced and programmed the Multimedia Sikh Museum using new technology to make it easily accessible and interactive for all. The museum in Mississauga will cover the Sikh religion, its history, culture and Sikh heritage. It will provide information about Sikh beliefs, ceremonies, customs and traditions. Keeping with the Sikh belief and tradition of "recognize all humanity as one", this Museum will contain information about various other faiths as well. It house more than 50,000 pages of text in various languages, thousands of pictures, audio, video and animation which will cater to the needs of students, teachers, preachers, judges and researchers. The opening ceremony of the museum was performed by Baba Sewa Singh (of Kar Sewa, Khadur Sahib fame). Jasjit Singh Bhullar, President of Ontario Khalsa Darbar said: "The purpose behind setting up the multifaceted museum is to provide information on the Sikh faith and to foster the concept of diversity, promote multiculturalism, and enhance mutual tolerance. The museum will educate the present and future generations about the Sikhs and provide a deeper understanding of the beliefs, history and culture of the Sikhs. The Sikh Museum will certainly have a positive impact on our community and provide excellent learning opportunities." The Ontario Khalsa Darbar Gurdwara was founded in a small trailer at its present location in the mid-1970's and with the support of local congregation has now become a lage complex housing a major Sikh institution. It provides services to thousands of visitors every day. Admission to the guided tour of the Multimedia Sikh Museum will always be free for all visitors, Sikh and non-Sikh. October 17, 2010
