It is sad to notice that a country with over a billion people and breeding faster than ever cannot have the mentality nor the desire to manufacture great athletes. We talk about Milkha Singh who was amazing ions ago. What happened after then? Nada, Zip, Zero. Not too long ago we had the Commonwealth games in India and we did miserably bad in them thanks to corruption riddled bridges made of sand and many other things. One should ask which gods guide them towards these immoral actions. Countries like Cuba have better athletes than we do. This is where the Government’s responsibility starts in grooming athletes. The best long distance runners come from Kenya. No, it is not in the genes. One Milkha Singh of Kenya started this trend and now people from all over the world go to train there. The cyclist who won the Tour de France in 2013 by the name of Chris Froome, now from Britain was born in Kenya where he trained and has a black coach; a first in the world cyclists’ competition. When China came into sports, they went full throttle and won a lot more medals then they could even dream of when they held the Olympics there. Their latest feat was winning the first world beach volley ball women’s competition against Germany. Nobody had heard of the latter either in this particular sport. Brasil and USA, the known athletes in this sport were 3rd and 4th. India needs, the desire and even more important the moral compass to produce many Milkha Singhs. The more Ram Naam we chant, the less humane and more corrupt we become, a sad way of life and the worst part is that it is guilt free with a drunkard dormant conscious. The rampant drug and alcohol consumption is there because the honchos do not create the needed programs where the youth can be trained to become athletes. If India took out 1% off their defence budget and spent that money on the sports infrastructure, the rise will be faster than any missile parts that amount could buy. Once, the people in power stop with these corrupt actions like putting tilaks on their foreheads pretending to be pious and god fearing while stuffing their pockets with money, then we will be able to sow the seeds of Milkha Singhs. We can only keep our toes crossed for India to become morally solid. That would be a first step towards the Marathon of metamorphosis. Tejwant Singh
