Man in court after stealing hi-fi equipment from town’s Sikh Leisure Centre http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/local-west-yorkshire-news/2013/02/22/man-in-court-after-stealing-hi-fi-equipment-from-town-s-sikh-leisure-centre-86081-32857275/#ixzz2LfRFPgmT Benjamin Lilley, of Spring Street in Springwood, admitted the theft of the equipment valued at £400. He then sold it for just £25 at Cash Converters store in Huddersfield. Kirklees magistrates were told that the theft happened on January 30. Earlier, Lilley and another male had been seen on CCTV entering the gym area of the Prospect Street centre. They returned later that day, Lilley carrying an empty holdall. The men stuffed the electrical equipment into the bag and left. Prosecutor Alex Bozman said that the Awia hi-fi was sold for far less that its value and was not recovered. The other man involved was cautioned. Lilley, 25, was convicted for a dishonesty offence a couple of years ago. Mike Sisson-Pell, for Lilley, said that his client was short of cash. Mr Sisson-Pell added: “Mr Lilley’s original intention was to get the hi-fi back, but he wasn’t in the position to recover it. “It was then sold on to a third party.” The solicitor added that Lilley’s crime was “stupid.” He said: “Everybody knows that Cash Convertors has cameras.” Magistrates sentenced Lilley to a community order for 12 months with 80 hours of unpaid work. They also told him to pay £200 compensation and £60 victim surcharge.
