KUALA LUMPUR: About 150 people attended the Malaysian Sikh Union's (MSU) Parents Day Celebration at the Sultani Restaurant at Flamingo Hotel, Ampang, recently. One of the families at the celebration, (from left) Sukhjit Singh, Amrit Kaur, Harjitpal Singh, Kaluant Kaur and Suwaran Singh. MSU secretary Sukhjit Singh said this was the first time the union was organising such an event. "Everybody celebrates Mothers Day and Fathers Day separately but by having this event we can honour both of our parents together," said Sukhjit. Organising chairperson Malkit Kaur said the main purpose of the event was to promote fellowship. "The event aims to bring parents together in a relaxing atmosphere to treat them to an evening of good food and entertainment," she said. MSU has around 300 members in the Federal Territory and more than 2,400 members throughout the country. Guests were entertained by local artiste Chandran Guzar who recently launched an album in India. Guests were served North Indian cuisine and treated to free flow of beer. MSU adviser Datuk Dr Mohan Singh said other branches of MSU should organise similar events. "This is a good start. It brings everyone together and should be carried out yearly," he added. Harjitpal Singh, 28, who came in a costume said: "I didn't know it would be expensive to rent a retro costume for the event." He said he had enjoyed the attention that he got from the public on his way to the hotel. There were 30 lucky draw prizes, including a one-day two-night stay in Tioman for two and a two-day one-night family stay for six in Genting View Resort. The oldest mother present, Kartar Kaur, 78, and oldest father Minder Singh, 72, from Seremban received a fruit basket each.
