Landmark work will hit the fashion week catwalk thanks to a top Indian designer. Liverpool artists The Singh Twins have had their work exhibited in galleries across the world, from London’s Tate to Canada and the USA, in books and in films. But now they are about to see their city-inspired art in a new setting: as part of a new collection by one of India’s leading fashion designers. Amrit and Rabindra Singh have teamed up with Tarun Tahiliani for his new spring/summer 15 range which features Liverpool’s coat of arms, cityscape and iconic landmarks. Designs by Indian fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani, featuring artwork by The Singh Twins And they are flying out to Mumbai this weekend to join him on the catwalk at Lakme Fashion Week, India’s equivalent of the Paris, Milan, New York and London week of shows. “Apparently he’s been a fan of our work for quite some time, and we couldn’t have got a better collaboration in terms of profile and the respect he has in the fashion world internationally,” says Amrit. Artists the Singh Twins, Amrit & Rabindra The artists, who live in W irral but consider Liverpool their home city, have become known for their modern take on the Indian miniature tradition. Their commissions include two major paintings celebrating Liverpool’s 800th birthday in 2007 and status as European Capital of Culture in 2008, and they received MBEs from the Queen in 2010. Amrit says they had been considering moving into interior design and fashion when Tarun mentioned he thought their work would lend itself well and asked if they’d like to work together. “It all happened really quickly after that, within a year of that first discussion,” she adds. “We met in London and talked about what he wanted to do, and we basically gave him a free rein with our collection and waited to see what he’d do. “Tarun is known particularly for his couture bridal collection, but he wanted to move into more casual ready-to-wear so he’s used our work on saris and daywear and he’s really homed in on the Liverpool imagery.” The designer will reveal his collection to buyers and media on March 21 at one of the top hotels in Mumbai and the 49-year-old identical twins will take their bow alongside him on the catwalk. “That will be a bit nerve-racking, it’s out of our comfort zone, but I guess we should try and enjoy the moment,” laughs Amrit. Designs by Indian fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani for spring/summer 2015 featuring artwork by the Singh Twins It will be a flying visit to India for the pair, who have a date in Chester the day before, receiving Honorary Doctorate degrees from the University of Chester for their contribution to British art. “It is going to be a quick turnaround, we don’t arrive until the morning of the show and then we have to leave a day later, but we’ll make the most of it,” she says. As always, the twins will be inseparable on their travels. They work side-by-side every day at their Wirral home ... or face to face. “We started off developing our individual work, in the early days, but as time went on we both wanted a joint input so now it’s 50/50 on everything we do,” explains Amrit. “That does often involve sitting side-by-side and painting together, or we’ll go head-to-head. If it gets too much then one of us will go off and do the PR or admin while the other one gets on with it, then we’ll do shifts. “It can get a little difficult, depending on the size of the particular artwork, but mostly we manage not to injure each other with our paintbrushes!”
