Hence there has been a long felt need for its linguistic interpretation different from the existing Punjabi linguistics. The content of Guru Nanak bani is eternal, but the structure remains human. The study of the structure of Guru Nanak’s hymns can be studied linguistically keeping in mind the context i.e., spirituality. His maximum writing is in Panjabi with only a few hymns in Lehndi, Persian, Sahskriti, Sadh Bhakha etc. At that time, the Punjabi language was not exactly the same as of today. The structural analysis here is carried out on the basis of sources of Guru Period in this chapter; comparing the structure of Guru Nanak bani with Modern Punjabi and with the structure of the contemporaries in the following chapter at the levels of sentence, word and phoneme.</p><p></p><p>Guru Nanak’s banis; Japuji, Sodaru, Sohila and Assa di Var which the Sikhs recite daily are fundamentally in Punjabi language. The structural analysis of these banis is taken up by taking the preliminary lines from each bani. Only limited samples are taken keeping in view the scope of the study. The fundamental linguistic analysis of Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been carried out at the word structure level by S. Teja Singh1, Prof. Sahib Singh2, Dhana Singh3 and Dr. Harkirat Singh4 in different forms but detailed study of sentence structure analysis has not been found. Independent linguistic analysis of Guru Nanak bani is also not been found.</p><p></p><p>The help of the linguistic analysis in the earlier research especially in the study of word structure is taken into account where necessary. The study is mainly centered on the Guru Nanak’s hymns which are in Punjabi.</p><p></p><p>Sentence structure:</p><p></p><p>A sentence structure consists of words set in a grammatical form with linguistic content and proper semantic structure. Few lines from Guru Nanak’s hymns are analyzed here for their sentence structure in comparison to Modern Punjabi:</p><p></p><p><em>ਹੁਕਮੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ॥ (ਜਪੁਜੀ ਪੰਨਾ 1)</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਤਮ ਤੇ ਨੀਚ (ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਖ ਪਾਈਦੇ ਹਨ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>By His Command some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained.</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 1: Structural analysis of line 1 from Japuji</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><em>ਇਕਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਇਕਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਦਾ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>ਇਕਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever.</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 2 Structural analysis of line 2 from Japuji</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><em>ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 3: Structural analysis of line 3 from Japuji</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><em>ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>ਨਾਨਕ (!) ਜੇ (ਰੱਬ ਦੇ) ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਬੁੱਝ ਲਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹੇਗਾ।</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego.</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 4: Structural analysis of Assa di Var</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><em>ਸੱਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਮ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਅਪਾਰ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੋਲੋ ਭਾਉ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਅਪਾਰ (ਨਾਲ)</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>True is the Master, True is His Name—speak it with infinite love.</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 5: Structural analysis of line 1 of stanza 2 from Japuji</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><em>ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥ (ਆਸਾ ਮ: 1, ਘਰੁ 8 ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ, ਪੰਨਾ 419)</em></p><p><em></em></p><p><em>Through Truth, one meets the True One; He is not obtained through falsehood. Centering your consciousness on the True Lord, you shall not have to come into the world again.</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 6: Structural analysis off line 1 of stanza 3 from Assa:</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><em>ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥</em></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 7: Structural analysis of line 2 of stanza 3 from Assa:</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>From the study of structure of Guru Nanak’s hymns compared with Modern Punjabi, above</p><p>following facts emerge:</p><p>1. ‘The structure is Subject Object Verb (SOV)’ or its extended variant with the help of modifiers (adjectives with subject and objectives and adverbs with verbs).</p><p>2. The use of cases and conjunctions as i and u (ਿ & ੁ) ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਔਂਕੜ, modify the word and differentiate old and the modern Punjabi. These are used as cases primarily and in other forms as well. Stress (ਅੱਧਕ) and nasalization also affect the structure.</p><p>3. Understanding of Guru Nanak’s hymns is easy and straight through this structural analysis. It becomes quite clear when we remove inflexions i and u ( ਿ& ੁ ) (ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਔਂਕੜ) at the ending of words altogether and add stress (ਅੱਧਕ) and nasalization symbols ( ੱ & ਂ ) wherever necessary.</p><p></p><p>Vowel Structure</p><p></p><p>Word structure has been found studied in detail by Dr. Sahib Singh and Dr. Harkirat Singh. Dr Sahib Singh studied the grammar of Gurbani as can be seen in the tables duly modified for the purpose of the study:</p><p><strong>Table 8: Various cases are given in the table with examples:</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 9: Use of these various cases in Gurbani</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>Frequency Analyses:</p><p></p><p>Use of the frequency of these phonemes in various words is studied here through frequency analysis. Words, letters and tones of language of Guru Nanak bani are compared with modern Punjabi. The extracts from are Japuji, Sodar, Sohila and Sri Rag are considered here.</p><p></p><p>Japuji</p><p></p><p>The first shlok and the first paudi of Japuji are taken up here for linguistic analysis.</p><p>ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ ॥ </p><p></p><p><strong>Guru Nanak’s Japuji’s Shalok and first step</strong> have been compared with Modern Punjabi at <strong>Table 10 given in annexure.</strong> The following differences have been found:</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Guru Nanak bani - Sodaru adopted in Modern Punjabi</strong></p><p></p><p>ਸੋ ਦਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਹਾ ਸੋ ਘਰ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਸ ਬਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੰਭਾਲੇ ॥ </p><p><strong>Sodar First step</strong> compared with Modern Punjabi is given in</p><p></p><p><strong>Table 11 given in annexure </strong>and the following details and the differences have been found:</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Guru Nanak bani Sohila</strong></p><p>ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥ 2॥</p><p>(ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਦੀਪਕੀ ਮਹਲਾ 1, ਪੰਨਾ 12)</p><p><strong>Sohila Rag Gaudi Deepki First step compared with Modern Punjabi as given out in Table 12</strong> in annexure and the following details and the differences have been found:</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Guru Nanak Bani; Sri Rag</strong></p><p>ਮੋਤੀ ਤ ਮੰਦਰ ਊਸਰਹਿ ਰਤਨੀ ਤ ਹੋਹਿ ਜੜਾਉ ॥ 3 ॥</p><p>(ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ 1 ਪੰਨਾ 14)</p><p><strong>Sri: Rag- First step is compared with Modern Punjabi given in Table 13 at annexure</strong> and the following details and the differences have been found:</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 14: Frequency of use of phonemes in Words used various hymns</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>From the analysis of the above the frequency of use of differing phonemes of Guru Nanak Bani from modern Punjabi are as below:</p><p></p><p>Most prominent variations from in Guru Nanak’s bani are discussed here in detail with the reasons of the variations.</p><p><strong>1. Extra ੁ ( _ ) ਔਂਕੜ</strong> on end letter (29). This phoneme has been has been extensively used by Guru Nanak at the ending of a word to depict singularity. It is also used in Noun Adjective. The examples are given here ਸਚੁ (ਸੱਚ), ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ (ਬਸੰਤਰ), ਧਰਮੁ (ਧਰਮ), ਚਿਤੁ (ਚਿਤ), ਗੁਪਤੁ (ਗੁਪਤ), ਪਵਣੁ (ਪਵਣ), ਜਿਤੁ (ਜਿਤ), ਘਰੁ (ਘਰ) etc.</p><p><strong>2. Extra ਿ( ਿ) ਸਿਹਾਰੀ </strong>on the end letter (32) has been extensively used by Guru Nanak at the ending of a word. Maximum use of ਿ Sihari has been as a proposition. ਨਾਲਿ, ਉਪਰਿ, ਬਾਹਰਿ, ਤੁਲਿ etc., have been used at the end of the word as a preposition. The modern Punjabi poetry has this great disadvantage now as it does not use this i as a preposition.</p><p><strong>3. e: ( ੈ ) ਦੁਲਾਈਆਂ for e ( ੇ )</strong> (16) It has been used as preposition at the end of the word e.g., ਹੋਈਐ, ਸੋਚੈ, ਚੁਪੈ, ਕੂੜੈ, ਗਾਵੈ, ਦੇਖੈਗਾ, ਸੋਹਿਲੈ, ਦਾਨੈ, ਪਵੈ, ਆਖੀਐ, ਆਵੈ, ਵੀਸਰੈ, ਸੋਹੈ, ਰਾਖੈ etc.</p><p><strong>4. Use of e: instead of e is also significant. Letters and sounds ਸ਼, ਖ਼, ਗ਼, ਜ਼, ਫ਼ are also not used in Guru Nanak’s hymns.</p><p></p><p>According to Dr Harkirat Singh, in Guru Nanak’s hymns ‘three akhandi dhunis i.e., use of <strong>stress, nasalization</strong> and <strong>tones</strong> are found used’.5</p><p></p><p><strong>Stress: </strong>Stress is being used in <em>Sadh Bhakha</em> e.g., in Sidh Goshat. It is also mixed in other banis where there is a mix of <em>Sadh Bhakha</em> or some words of <em>sadh bhakha</em> are used. However no letter or symbol is used to depict this stress, as is being used in modern Panjabi. Probably no need was felt at that time to use any letter or symbols to express the stress as we use now in the form of <em>adhak</em> ( ੱ ). During communication, the stress being a tonal feature, it was used by some while neglected by others and at times also it was being placed at some words while it was neglected for other similar tone words, as is being done even now. According to Dr Harkirat Singh since this caused confusion; probably this was not used at all in Gurbani.</p><p></p><p>There is also a difference of stress in the use of various dialects and in other languages wherefrom certain words were imported. Even these days proper precaution is not taken in the use of stress as in the use of nasalization. The opinions of various linguists of Panjabi regarding use of stress differ as it is difficult to decide the point of stress. This confusion is not only in Panjabi; similar is the case with other Indian and Sematic languages as well. The case of English however is different where stress has clear symbols and markings. These or other like reasons would have been the cause of non use of stress symbol ( ੱ ) in Guru Nanak <em>bani6</em></p><p><strong>Nasalisation: </strong>The use of nasalization is very limited in Guru Nanak bani, that is why the modern Punjabi speaker uses bindi or tippi ( ਂ or ੰ ) in Guru Nanak’s hymn of his own to relate meanings to the modern Punjabi. A few examples of non use of bindi in feminine plurals forms is are given below:</p><p></p><p>(ੳ) ਰਾਤੀ ਰੁਤੀ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 464)</p><p></p><p>In the above lines plural feminine nouns like ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ, ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ, ਨੇਕੀਆ, ਬਦੀਆ, ਘੜੀਆ, ਗੋਪੀਆ (ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ, ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ, ਨੇਕੀਆਂ, ਬਦੀਆਂ) now use bindi nasalization i.e., ਆਂ instead of ਆ. Similarly in Lehndi ਰਾਤੀ, ਰੁਤੀ, ਥਿਤੀ, ਪਾਤਾਲੀ, ਆਕਾਸੀ (ਰਾਤੀਂ, ਰੁਤੀਂ, ਥਿਤੀਂ, ਪਾਤਾਲੀਂ, ਆਕਾਸੀਂ) now use bindi nasalization at the ending letter.</p><p></p><p>(ੳ) ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਾਲਾਹਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥(ਪੰਨਾ 466)</p><p></p><p>(ਅ) ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ (ਪੰਨਾ 418)</p><p></p><p>(ੲ) ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ (ਪੰਨਾ 419)</p><p></p><p>The last letter masculine gender plurals are even today pronounced with nasalized sounds, e.g., ਭਗਤਾ bhagta (bhagtan), ਸਿਧਾ siddha (siddhan) ਪਾਧੇ padhe (pandhe) ਪੁਰਾਣਾ Purana (puranan) etc. These nasals were not used at the time of Guru Nanak.</p><p>(ੲ) The forms of ablative cases of the nouns were also different from the present Punjabi.</p><p>In the ending letter of words ending with ( ਾ ) of first person of singular cases nansalisation is not used.</p><p>(ੳ) ਜਿਉ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰੇ (ਪੰਨਾ 421)</p><p>(ਅ) ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਟੇਕ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਤੂੰ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 436)</p><p>In the ending letter of words ending with ( ੀ ) of first person of singular cases nasalisation e.g., ਪੁਕਾਰੀ, ਥਾਈ, ਜਾਈ (ਪੁਕਾਰੀਂ, ਥਾਈਂ, ਜਾਈਂ ) is not used.</p><p>(ੳ) ਇਕਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਹੳ ੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ ਦਰਿ ਖਲੀ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 436)</p><p>(ਅ) ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ਜਿਥੈ ਹਉ ਜਾਈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਉ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 438)</p><p>With plurals of the masculine and feminine genders of instrumental case in Guru Nanak bani, nasalization of the last letter does not occur. Names in these lines ਅਖੀ, ਕੰਨੀ, ਆਚਾਰੀ etc. are forms of instrumental case in which there is no nasalization in ending i: (ੀ)</p><p>Use of i: n ( ੀਂ ) in place of ( ੀ ) by present readers of Guru Nanak bani is not correct.</p><p>(ੳ) ਗਲੀਂ ਅਸੀ ਚੰਗੀਆ ਆਚਾਰੀ ਬੁਰੀਆਹ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 1168)</p><p>The plural form of locative case of Guru Nanak bani is also different. The Noun form of the plural of locative case ਤੀਰਥੀ (ਤੀਰਥੀਂ), ਦੰਦੀ (ਦੰਦੀਂ) etc., too does not have nasalization on i: ( ੀ ) on last letter of the word. During Guru’s period it was spoken as it is and it is wrong to read using i:n ( ੀਂ )</p><p>(ੳ) ਨਾਵਣ ਚਲੇ ਤੀਰਥੀ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੈ ਤਨਿ ਚੋਰ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 789)</p><p>(ਅ) ਦੰਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਭੈ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 642)</p><p>The use of nasalization on verbs:</p><p>In Guru Nanak bani many forms of verbs which do not have nasalization in last sound of the last letter, but we pronounce these as nasalized today e.g.,</p><p>(ੳ) ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਕਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਰੀ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 2)</p><p>(ਅ) ਹਰਣੀ ਹੋਵਾ ਬਨਿ ਬਸਾ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਉ ॥(ਪੰਨਾ 157)</p><p></p><p>These verb forms ਨਾਵਾ ਭਾਵਾ ਹੋਵਾ ਬਸਾ etc., are according to Guru Nanak’s times. The ending a: ( ਾ ) is not nasalized. In the modern Panjabi this has become nasalized, hence the reader does the rendering of Guru Nanak bani as (ਪ.438)</p><p></p><p>In these lines verb forms like ਪੁਕਾਰੀ, ਜਾਈ etc., belong to Lehndi which have now changed as ਪੁਕਾਰੀਂ and ਜਾਈਂ respectively. In the old Lehndi ending i: ( ੀ ) was not nasalized and its right pronunciation is the same as is available in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.</p><p></p><p>There are some verb forms which are commonly used in Guru Nanak bani but are not used in the present day Punjabi. In Guru Nanak bani nasalization is not used with these forms.</p><p></p><p>(ੳ) ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇੰਦ ਇਦਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ (ਪ.6)</p><p>(ਅ) ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਢੂਢਤ ਫਿਰਿ ਰਹੀ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ॥ (ਪ. 936)</p><p></p><p>In the above line the verb forms ਗਾਵਹਿ, ਕਰਉ are not used in Panjabi anywhere and nasalization is not projected but these their pronunciation has become as ਗਾਵਹਿੰ, ਕਰਉਂ which is again wrong. Similarly other sound which are pronounced as nasalized include ਇਉ, ਸਿਉ, ਕਿਉ, ਜਿਉ, ਤਿਉ whose pronunciation is wrongly done as ਇਉਂ, ਸਿਉਂ, ਕਿਉਂ, ਜਿਉਂ, ਤਿਉਂ ॥</p><p>To conclude we can say that :</p><p>1. The fundamental language structure of Guru Nanak’s bani is Punjabi of Guru Period which is at slight variance from modern Punjabi.</p><p>2. ‘The structure is Subject Object Verb (SOV)’ or its extended variant with the help of modifiers (adjectives with subject and objectives and adverbs with verbs).</p><p>3. The use of cases and conjunctions as i and u ( ਿ& ੁ ) ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਔਂਕੜ, modify the word and differentiate old and the modern Punjabi. These are used as cases primarily and in other forms as well. Stress (ਅੱਧਕ) and nasalization also affect the structure. Use of ( ੁ ) and ( ਿ) is extensive at the ending of the word.</p><p>4. Use of ( ੈ ) for ( ੇ ) is also prominent.</p><p>5. Use of nasalized ( ਂ ) is nil.</p><p>6. The sign of stress ( ੱ ) is also not used.</p><p>7. There is no use of ਸ਼ ਖ਼ ਗ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ as well.</p><p></p><p><strong>Annexure</strong></p><p><strong>Table 15: Japuji First step compared with Modern Punjabi</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 16: Sodar First step compared with Modern Punjabi</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 17: Sohila ra:g Gaudi di<img src="data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7" class="smilie smilie--sprite smilie--sprite7" alt=":p" title="Stick Out Tongue :p" loading="lazy" data-shortname=":p" />ki: First step compared with Modern Punjabi</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>Table 1: Sri: Ra:g- First step compared with Modern Punjabi</strong></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong>References</strong></p><p></p><p>1 Teja Singh, Sri Guru Granth Sahib jivich Shabdantik lagan matran de gujhe bhed, SGPC, Sri Amritsar, October, 2008</p><p>2 Sahib Singh (Prof.), Gurba:ni: Viakaran, 16th edn, Singh Brothers, Sri Amritsar, Dec 2007</p><p>3 Dhana Singh,Gurba:ni: da Shud ucharan, All India Pingalwadacharitable Society, Sri Amritsar, 5th edn, 2005</p><p>4 Harkirat Singh (Dr.) Gurbani di Bhasha te Viakaran, Punjabi University, Patiala, 1997</p><p>5 Ibid p. 76</p><p>6 Ibid</p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p><strong><a href="https://www.sikhnet.com/authors/dr-dalvinder-singh-grewal" target="_blank">Dr. Dalvinder Singh Grewal</a></strong></p><p></p><p>Dr. Grewal has written 112 books in English and Punjabi along with thousands of articles.</p></blockquote><p></p>
[HEADING=2]Linguistic Structure of Guru Nanak Bani in Punjabi on the basis of Source of Guru Period[/HEADING] by Dr. Dalvinder Singh Grewal Introduction The language of Gurbani is not mere old Punjabi; it contains the old forms of other dialects of Northern India as well. Hence there has been a long felt need for its linguistic interpretation different from the existing Punjabi linguistics. The content of Guru Nanak bani is eternal, but the structure remains human. The study of the structure of Guru Nanak’s hymns can be studied linguistically keeping in mind the context i.e., spirituality. His maximum writing is in Panjabi with only a few hymns in Lehndi, Persian, Sahskriti, Sadh Bhakha etc. At that time, the Punjabi language was not exactly the same as of today. The structural analysis here is carried out on the basis of sources of Guru Period in this chapter; comparing the structure of Guru Nanak bani with Modern Punjabi and with the structure of the contemporaries in the following chapter at the levels of sentence, word and phoneme. Guru Nanak’s banis; Japuji, Sodaru, Sohila and Assa di Var which the Sikhs recite daily are fundamentally in Punjabi language. The structural analysis of these banis is taken up by taking the preliminary lines from each bani. Only limited samples are taken keeping in view the scope of the study. The fundamental linguistic analysis of Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been carried out at the word structure level by S. Teja Singh1, Prof. Sahib Singh2, Dhana Singh3 and Dr. Harkirat Singh4 in different forms but detailed study of sentence structure analysis has not been found. Independent linguistic analysis of Guru Nanak bani is also not been found. The help of the linguistic analysis in the earlier research especially in the study of word structure is taken into account where necessary. The study is mainly centered on the Guru Nanak’s hymns which are in Punjabi. Sentence structure: A sentence structure consists of words set in a grammatical form with linguistic content and proper semantic structure. Few lines from Guru Nanak’s hymns are analyzed here for their sentence structure in comparison to Modern Punjabi: ਹੁਕਮੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ॥ (ਜਪੁਜੀ ਪੰਨਾ 1) ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਉਤਮ ਤੇ ਨੀਚ (ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਲਿਖੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਖ ਪਾਈਦੇ ਹਨ॥ By His Command some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained. Table 1: Structural analysis of line 1 from Japuji ਇਕਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਇਕਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਦਾ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ॥ ਇਕਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ॥ Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever. Table 2 Structural analysis of line 2 from Japuji ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ॥ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ। Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command Table 3: Structural analysis of line 3 from Japuji ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ (!) ਜੇ (ਰੱਬ ਦੇ) ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਬੁੱਝ ਲਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹੇਗਾ। O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego. Table 4: Structural analysis of Assa di Var ਸੱਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਮ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਅਪਾਰ॥ ਸੱਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਬੋਲੋ ਭਾਉ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਅਪਾਰ (ਨਾਲ) True is the Master, True is His Name—speak it with infinite love. Table 5: Structural analysis of line 1 of stanza 2 from Japuji ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥ (ਆਸਾ ਮ: 1, ਘਰੁ 8 ਅਸਟਪਦੀਆ, ਪੰਨਾ 419) Through Truth, one meets the True One; He is not obtained through falsehood. Centering your consciousness on the True Lord, you shall not have to come into the world again. Table 6: Structural analysis off line 1 of stanza 3 from Assa: ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥ Table 7: Structural analysis of line 2 of stanza 3 from Assa: From the study of structure of Guru Nanak’s hymns compared with Modern Punjabi, above following facts emerge: 1. ‘The structure is Subject Object Verb (SOV)’ or its extended variant with the help of modifiers (adjectives with subject and objectives and adverbs with verbs). 2. The use of cases and conjunctions as i and u (ਿ & ੁ) ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਔਂਕੜ, modify the word and differentiate old and the modern Punjabi. These are used as cases primarily and in other forms as well. Stress (ਅੱਧਕ) and nasalization also affect the structure. 3. Understanding of Guru Nanak’s hymns is easy and straight through this structural analysis. It becomes quite clear when we remove inflexions i and u ( ਿ& ੁ ) (ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਔਂਕੜ) at the ending of words altogether and add stress (ਅੱਧਕ) and nasalization symbols ( ੱ & ਂ ) wherever necessary. Vowel Structure Word structure has been found studied in detail by Dr. Sahib Singh and Dr. Harkirat Singh. Dr Sahib Singh studied the grammar of Gurbani as can be seen in the tables duly modified for the purpose of the study: Table 8: Various cases are given in the table with examples: Table 9: Use of these various cases in Gurbani Frequency Analyses: Use of the frequency of these phonemes in various words is studied here through frequency analysis. Words, letters and tones of language of Guru Nanak bani are compared with modern Punjabi. The extracts from are Japuji, Sodar, Sohila and Sri Rag are considered here. Japuji The first shlok and the first paudi of Japuji are taken up here for linguistic analysis. ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ॥ ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ ॥ ਚੁਪੈ ਚੁਪ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਲਾਇ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥ ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੀ ਜੇ ਬੰਨਾ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਭਾਰ॥ ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਤ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਲਿ॥ ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ॥ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁ. ਗ੍ਰੰ, ਸਾ. ਮ.1, ਜਪੁਜੀ, ਪੰਨਾ 1) ਆਦਿ ਸੱਚ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸੱਚ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸੱਚ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸੱਚ॥ ਸੋਚੇ ਸੋਚ ਨਾ ਹੋਈਦਾ ਜੇ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਲੱਖ ਵਾਰ॥ ਚੁੱਪਿਆਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਨਾ ਹੋਈਦਾ ਜੇ ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਾਂ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥ ਭੁੱਖਿਆਂ ਭੁੱਖ ਨ ਉੱਤਰੇ ਜੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪੂੁਰੀਆਂ ਭਾਰ॥ ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ ਲੱਖ ਹੋਣ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਨਾ ਚੱਲੇ ਨਾਲ॥ ਕਿੰਜ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਏ ਕਿੰਜ ਟੁੱਟੇ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਲ॥ ਹੁਕਮ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਚੱਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲ॥ Guru Nanak’s Japuji’s Shalok and first step have been compared with Modern Punjabi at Table 10 given in annexure. The following differences have been found: Guru Nanak bani - Sodaru adopted in Modern Punjabi ਸੋ ਦਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਹਾ ਸੋ ਘਰ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਸ ਬਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੰਭਾਲੇ ॥ ਵਾਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਦ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖਾਂ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਾਗ ਪਰੀ ਸਿਉਂ ਕਹੀਅਨ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥ ਗਾਉਣ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰ ਗਾਵੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਧਰਮ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥ ਗਾਉਣ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਗੁਪਤ ਲਿਖ ਜਾਣਨ ਲਿਖ ਲਿਖ ਧਰਮ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ Sodar First step compared with Modern Punjabi is given in Table 11 given in annexure and the following details and the differences have been found: Guru Nanak bani Sohila ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਸਿਵਰਿਹੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ॥1॥ ਤੁਮ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਾ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ॥ ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੋਹਿਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਦੇਖੈਗਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਾਤੇ ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ॥2॥ (ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਦੀਪਕੀ ਮਹਲਾ 1, ਪੰਨਾ 12) Sohila adopted in Modern Punjabi ਜੈ ਘਰ ਕੀਰਤ ਆਖੀਏ ਕਰਤੇ ਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਵੀਚਾਰ॥ ਤਿਸ ਘਰ ਗਾਵੋ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ॥1॥ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗਾਵੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਦਾ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ॥ ਮੈਂ ਵਾਰੀ ਜਿਸ ਸੋਹਿਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ਹੋਏ॥1॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਸੰਭਾਲੀਅਨ ਦੇਖੇਗਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨੇ ਕੀਮਤ ਨਾ ਪਵੇ ਤਿਸ ਦਾਤੇ ਕੌਣ ਸੁਮਾਰ ॥2॥ (ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਦੀਪਕੀ ਮਹਲਾ 1, ਪੰਨਾ 12) Sohila Rag Gaudi Deepki First step compared with Modern Punjabi as given out in Table 12 in annexure and the following details and the differences have been found: Guru Nanak Bani; Sri Rag ਮੋਤੀ ਤ ਮੰਦਰ ਊਸਰਹਿ ਰਤਨੀ ਤ ਹੋਹਿ ਜੜਾਉ ॥ ਕਸਤੂਰਿ ਕੁੰਗੂ ਅਗਰਿ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਲੀਪਿ ਆਵੈ ਚਾਉ ॥ ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ 1 ॥ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ ਮੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਛਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥ 1 ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਧਰਤੀ ਤ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਤੀ ਪਲਘਿ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਾਉ ॥ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਣੀ ਸੋਹੈ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਪਸਾਉ ॥ ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ 2 ॥ ਸਿਧੁ ਹੋਵਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਲਾਈ ਰਿਧਿ ਆਖਾ ਆਉ ॥ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਸਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ 3 ॥ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ 1 ਪੰਨਾ 14 Sri Rag: Modern Punjabi ਮੋਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਉਸਰੇ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਜੜਾਉ ॥ ਕਸਤੂਰ ਕੁੰਗੂ ਅਗਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਲੇਪ ਆਵੇ ਚਾਉ ॥ ਮੱਤ ਦੇਖ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਵਿਸਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਨਾਉਂ ॥ 1 ॥ ਹਰ ਬਿਨ ਜੀਉ ਜਲ ਬਲ ਜਾਉੇ ॥ ਮੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੁੱਛ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਉਂ ਥਾਉਂ ॥ 1 ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ ਧਰਤੀ ਤਾਂ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜੀ ਪਲੰਘ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਾਉਂ ॥ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮੁਖ ਮਣੀ ਸੋਹੇ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਪਸਾਉ ॥ ਮਤ ਦੇਖ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਵਿਸਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਨਾਉਂ ॥ 2 ॥ ਸਿੱਧ ਹੋਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਧ ਲਾਈ ਰਿੱਧ ਆਖਾਂ ਆਉ ॥ ਗੁਪਤ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਏ ਬੈਠਾ ਲੋਕ ਰੱਖਣ ਭਾਉ ॥ ਮਤ ਦੇਖ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਵਿਸਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਨਾਉਂ ॥ 3 ॥ (ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ 1 ਪੰਨਾ 14) Sri: Rag- First step is compared with Modern Punjabi given in Table 13 at annexure and the following details and the differences have been found: Table 14: Frequency of use of phonemes in Words used various hymns From the analysis of the above the frequency of use of differing phonemes of Guru Nanak Bani from modern Punjabi are as below: Most prominent variations from in Guru Nanak’s bani are discussed here in detail with the reasons of the variations. 1. Extra ੁ ( _ ) ਔਂਕੜ on end letter (29). This phoneme has been has been extensively used by Guru Nanak at the ending of a word to depict singularity. It is also used in Noun Adjective. The examples are given here ਸਚੁ (ਸੱਚ), ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ (ਬਸੰਤਰ), ਧਰਮੁ (ਧਰਮ), ਚਿਤੁ (ਚਿਤ), ਗੁਪਤੁ (ਗੁਪਤ), ਪਵਣੁ (ਪਵਣ), ਜਿਤੁ (ਜਿਤ), ਘਰੁ (ਘਰ) etc. 2. Extra ਿ( ਿ) ਸਿਹਾਰੀ on the end letter (32) has been extensively used by Guru Nanak at the ending of a word. Maximum use of ਿ Sihari has been as a proposition. ਨਾਲਿ, ਉਪਰਿ, ਬਾਹਰਿ, ਤੁਲਿ etc., have been used at the end of the word as a preposition. The modern Punjabi poetry has this great disadvantage now as it does not use this i as a preposition. 3. e: ( ੈ ) ਦੁਲਾਈਆਂ for e ( ੇ ) (16) It has been used as preposition at the end of the word e.g., ਹੋਈਐ, ਸੋਚੈ, ਚੁਪੈ, ਕੂੜੈ, ਗਾਵੈ, ਦੇਖੈਗਾ, ਸੋਹਿਲੈ, ਦਾਨੈ, ਪਵੈ, ਆਖੀਐ, ਆਵੈ, ਵੀਸਰੈ, ਸੋਹੈ, ਰਾਖੈ etc. 4. Nasalisation: ( ਂ ) ਬਿੰਦੀ not used (17) ਤਾ (ਤਾਂ), ਰਹਾ (ਰਹਾਂ, ਬੰਨਾ (ਬੰਨਾਂ), ਭੁਖਿਆ (ਭੁਖਿਆਂ), ਸੋਚੀ (ਸੋਚਿਆਂ), ਸਿਆਣਪਾ (ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ), ਪੁਰੀਆ (ਪੂਰੀਆਂ), ਸੋਚੈ (ਸੋਚਿਆਂ) ਚੁਪੈ (ਚੁਪਿਆਂ), ਸਿਉ (ਸਿਉਂ), ਅਸੰਖਾ (ਅਸੰਖਾਂ), ਨਾਉ (ਨਾਉਂ), ਤਾ (ਤਾਂ), ਹੋਵਾ (ਹੋਵਾਂ), ਆਖਾ (ਆਖਾਂ) 5. a: ( ਾ ) not used (07) ਨ (ਨਾ) 6. Stress needed ( 21) ਇਕ, ਲਖ, ਚੁਪੈ, ਚੁਪ, ਭੁਖਿਆ, ਉਤਰੀ, ਚਲੈ, ਚਲਣਾ, ਸੱਚ, ਵਜਣ, ਤੁਧਨੋ, ਵਜਣ, ਤੁਧਨੋ, ਮਤ, ਮੁਖਿ 7. Change in one letter (13) ਜ (ਜ਼), ਹ (ੲ) ੲ (ਨਲਿ) ਤ (ਸ), ਕ (ਦ) as in ਰਜਾਈ, ਹੋਹਿ, ਹੋਵਈ, ਮ(ਭ), ਬ (ਵ) ਬੀਚਾਰੋ (ਵੀਚਾਰੋ), ਸੰਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ(ਸੰਭਾਲੀਅਨ), ਤਿਤੁ (ਤਿਸ), ਕਾ (ਦਾ), ਤ (ਨਲਿ), ਸ (ਠ) as in ਜੜਤੀ (ਜੜੀ), ਬੈਸਾ (ਬੈਠਾ) 8. Others: Use of ( ੀ ) for ( ੇ ) in ਉਤਰੀ (ਉੱਤਰੇ), use of ( ੋ ) for ( ੈ + ੰ ), ਤੁਧਨੋ (ਤੁੱਧ ਨੂੰ, ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ), use of ( ੋ ) for ( ੇ) ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ (ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ), e in place i ey as ਿਹੋਇ (ਹੋਏ); use of ( ੰ) ਪਲਘ (ਪਲੰਘ), use of e: in place e ਵੀਸਰ ੈ (ਵਿਸਰੇ), use of ( ਿ) in place of (ਾਂ) ਰਤਨੀ (ਰਤਨਾਂ) Other most prominent differences are of the use of inflexions ( ੁ ), ( ਿ) nasalization ( ਂ ) and stress. Use of e: instead of e is also significant. Letters and sounds ਸ਼, ਖ਼, ਗ਼, ਜ਼, ਫ਼ are also not used in Guru Nanak’s hymns. According to Dr Harkirat Singh, in Guru Nanak’s hymns ‘three akhandi dhunis i.e., use of stress, nasalization and tones are found used’.5 Stress: Stress is being used in Sadh Bhakha e.g., in Sidh Goshat. It is also mixed in other banis where there is a mix of Sadh Bhakha or some words of sadh bhakha are used. However no letter or symbol is used to depict this stress, as is being used in modern Panjabi. Probably no need was felt at that time to use any letter or symbols to express the stress as we use now in the form of adhak ( ੱ ). During communication, the stress being a tonal feature, it was used by some while neglected by others and at times also it was being placed at some words while it was neglected for other similar tone words, as is being done even now. According to Dr Harkirat Singh since this caused confusion; probably this was not used at all in Gurbani. There is also a difference of stress in the use of various dialects and in other languages wherefrom certain words were imported. Even these days proper precaution is not taken in the use of stress as in the use of nasalization. The opinions of various linguists of Panjabi regarding use of stress differ as it is difficult to decide the point of stress. This confusion is not only in Panjabi; similar is the case with other Indian and Sematic languages as well. The case of English however is different where stress has clear symbols and markings. These or other like reasons would have been the cause of non use of stress symbol ( ੱ ) in Guru Nanak bani6 Nasalisation: The use of nasalization is very limited in Guru Nanak bani, that is why the modern Punjabi speaker uses bindi or tippi ( ਂ or ੰ ) in Guru Nanak’s hymn of his own to relate meanings to the modern Punjabi. A few examples of non use of bindi in feminine plurals forms is are given below: (ੳ) ਰਾਤੀ ਰੁਤੀ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰ॥ (ਜਪੁਜੀ, ਪੰਨਾ 8) (ਅ) ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ਵਾਚੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਦੂਰਿ॥ (ਜਪੁਜੀ, ਪੰਨਾ 8) (ੲ) ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਰਬ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 464) (ਸ) ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਨੇਕੀਆ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਬਦੀਆ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 464) In the above lines plural feminine nouns like ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ, ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ, ਨੇਕੀਆ, ਬਦੀਆ, ਘੜੀਆ, ਗੋਪੀਆ (ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ, ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ, ਨੇਕੀਆਂ, ਬਦੀਆਂ) now use bindi nasalization i.e., ਆਂ instead of ਆ. Similarly in Lehndi ਰਾਤੀ, ਰੁਤੀ, ਥਿਤੀ, ਪਾਤਾਲੀ, ਆਕਾਸੀ (ਰਾਤੀਂ, ਰੁਤੀਂ, ਥਿਤੀਂ, ਪਾਤਾਲੀਂ, ਆਕਾਸੀਂ) now use bindi nasalization at the ending letter. (ੳ) ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਾਲਾਹਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥(ਪੰਨਾ 466) (ਅ) ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ (ਪੰਨਾ 418) (ੲ) ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ (ਪੰਨਾ 419) The last letter masculine gender plurals are even today pronounced with nasalized sounds, e.g., ਭਗਤਾ bhagta (bhagtan), ਸਿਧਾ siddha (siddhan) ਪਾਧੇ padhe (pandhe) ਪੁਰਾਣਾ Purana (puranan) etc. These nasals were not used at the time of Guru Nanak. (ੲ) The forms of ablative cases of the nouns were also different from the present Punjabi. In the ending letter of words ending with ( ਾ ) of first person of singular cases nansalisation is not used. (ੳ) ਜਿਉ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰੇ (ਪੰਨਾ 421) (ਅ) ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਟੇਕ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਤੂੰ ॥(ਪੰਨਾ 422) (ੲ) ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਾ ਕਹਣਿ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਨ ਧੀਜਏ ॥(ਪੰਨਾ 436) (ਸ) ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 436) In the ending letter of words ending with ( ੀ ) of first person of singular cases nasalisation e.g., ਪੁਕਾਰੀ, ਥਾਈ, ਜਾਈ (ਪੁਕਾਰੀਂ, ਥਾਈਂ, ਜਾਈਂ ) is not used. (ੳ) ਇਕਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਹੳ ੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ ਦਰਿ ਖਲੀ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 436) (ਅ) ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ਜਿਥੈ ਹਉ ਜਾਈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਉ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 438) With plurals of the masculine and feminine genders of instrumental case in Guru Nanak bani, nasalization of the last letter does not occur. Names in these lines ਅਖੀ, ਕੰਨੀ, ਆਚਾਰੀ etc. are forms of instrumental case in which there is no nasalization in ending i: (ੀ) Use of i: n ( ੀਂ ) in place of ( ੀ ) by present readers of Guru Nanak bani is not correct. (ੳ) ਗਲੀਂ ਅਸੀ ਚੰਗੀਆ ਆਚਾਰੀ ਬੁਰੀਆਹ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 85) (ਅ) ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਈ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 596) (ੲ) ਅਖੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੰਨੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 1168) The plural form of locative case of Guru Nanak bani is also different. The Noun form of the plural of locative case ਤੀਰਥੀ (ਤੀਰਥੀਂ), ਦੰਦੀ (ਦੰਦੀਂ) etc., too does not have nasalization on i: ( ੀ ) on last letter of the word. During Guru’s period it was spoken as it is and it is wrong to read using i:n ( ੀਂ ) (ੳ) ਨਾਵਣ ਚਲੇ ਤੀਰਥੀ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੈ ਤਨਿ ਚੋਰ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 789) (ਅ) ਦੰਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਭੈ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 642) The use of nasalization on verbs: In Guru Nanak bani many forms of verbs which do not have nasalization in last sound of the last letter, but we pronounce these as nasalized today e.g., (ੳ) ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਕਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਰੀ ॥ (ਪੰਨਾ 2) (ਅ) ਹਰਣੀ ਹੋਵਾ ਬਨਿ ਬਸਾ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਉ ॥(ਪੰਨਾ 157) These verb forms ਨਾਵਾ ਭਾਵਾ ਹੋਵਾ ਬਸਾ etc., are according to Guru Nanak’s times. The ending a: ( ਾ ) is not nasalized. In the modern Panjabi this has become nasalized, hence the reader does the rendering of Guru Nanak bani as ਨਾਵਾਂ ਭਾਵਾਂ ਹੋਵਾਂ ਬਸਾਂ wrongly. (ੳ) ਇਕਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਹਉ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ ਦਰਿ ਖਲੀ ॥ (ਪ.436) (ਅ) ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ਜਿਥੈ ਹਉ ਜਾਈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਉ ॥ (ਪ.438) In these lines verb forms like ਪੁਕਾਰੀ, ਜਾਈ etc., belong to Lehndi which have now changed as ਪੁਕਾਰੀਂ and ਜਾਈਂ respectively. In the old Lehndi ending i: ( ੀ ) was not nasalized and its right pronunciation is the same as is available in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. There are some verb forms which are commonly used in Guru Nanak bani but are not used in the present day Punjabi. In Guru Nanak bani nasalization is not used with these forms. (ੳ) ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇੰਦ ਇਦਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥ (ਪ.6) (ਅ) ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਢੂਢਤ ਫਿਰਿ ਰਹੀ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ॥ (ਪ. 936) In the above line the verb forms ਗਾਵਹਿ, ਕਰਉ are not used in Panjabi anywhere and nasalization is not projected but these their pronunciation has become as ਗਾਵਹਿੰ, ਕਰਉਂ which is again wrong. Similarly other sound which are pronounced as nasalized include ਇਉ, ਸਿਉ, ਕਿਉ, ਜਿਉ, ਤਿਉ whose pronunciation is wrongly done as ਇਉਂ, ਸਿਉਂ, ਕਿਉਂ, ਜਿਉਂ, ਤਿਉਂ ॥ To conclude we can say that : 1. The fundamental language structure of Guru Nanak’s bani is Punjabi of Guru Period which is at slight variance from modern Punjabi. 2. ‘The structure is Subject Object Verb (SOV)’ or its extended variant with the help of modifiers (adjectives with subject and objectives and adverbs with verbs). 3. The use of cases and conjunctions as i and u ( ਿ& ੁ ) ਸਿਹਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਔਂਕੜ, modify the word and differentiate old and the modern Punjabi. These are used as cases primarily and in other forms as well. Stress (ਅੱਧਕ) and nasalization also affect the structure. Use of ( ੁ ) and ( ਿ) is extensive at the ending of the word. 4. Use of ( ੈ ) for ( ੇ ) is also prominent. 5. Use of nasalized ( ਂ ) is nil. 6. The sign of stress ( ੱ ) is also not used. 7. There is no use of ਸ਼ ਖ਼ ਗ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ as well.
